Greetings from the Office of Student Development
As we come into the flu season, Upper Iowa University has been making preparations to work with students who are displaying flu-like symptoms. We want to assist our ill students and at the same time, try to create a healthy environment for all.
The following information has been distributed to our student body. We invite you to review at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please contact Daryl Grove, Executive Director for Student Leadership & Adventure.
Precautions for Spreading Viruses (pdf file)
Upper Iowa has been refining and strengthening our emergency procedures. We have worked with city, county and state officials to create the safest environment possible for students and employees. Our efforts have proven to be very timely in light of national events on college campuses.
Although our campus is small and news can travel fast, the University has chosen to purchase an emergency notification system, called “UIU Alert.” When a life-threatening event occurs on campus or whenever the campus will be closed (for example, for weather-related reasons), a message will be sent to members of the University community via phone, text, and email. This system will allow us to reach students, employees and even parents, if they choose to participate. The key to the system is registering for notifications. These will be emergency alerts only and all numbers/e-mail addresses will remain confidential. Students who do not participate will have to sign a wavier of liability. Students can register or update their registration at any time.
This letter is your opportunity to speak with your son or daughter about registering for the system. In addition to providing their own contact information, they can list two numbers of family members they would like notified in case of a campus-wide emergency. Please speak with your daughter or son about registering and indicate family numbers you’d like to have listed. Upper Iowa University values the safety of its students and employees. If you have suggestions, questions or concerns please contact me at scottl@uiu.edu or (563) 425-5214.

If you are calling your child every day or multiple times a day, or if your child calls you at any sign on trouble, then you are hovering too much.
If you always contact school officials to resolve your child's problems, then you are overmanaging. One goal of college is for your child to become an independent adult who directs his/her own life. Overcoming challenges on his/her own is one step toward independence.
Giving advice to help your child make choices about his/her college career is acceptable; however, making decisions for your child is unacceptable. If you are choosing courses, majors, or a career path for your child, then you are overly involved.
College is not an experience involving parent and child equally. Therefore, you should not base your own self-worth on your child's success; and if you are, then you are hovering.
