James J. Casey, Jr. 

Visiting Professor in Leadership 

 

       James J. Casey, Jr., Visiting Professor in Leadership will teach classes in critical thinking and economics of international business.            James Casey, Jr. is an attorney, consultant, lecturer and author based in Shorewood, WI, USA.  In these roles, he provides a wide variety of expertise based upon 15 years in university research administration and local government.  Professor Casey has worked at a variety of research and non-research intensive universities, including Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts of Wisconsin since 1990, Casey previously practiced law in Wisconsin and worked for the City of Milwaukee and Huber Heights, Ohio.  

 

               Professor Casey has been a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) since 1995.  He is currently a member of the Board of Directors, co-editor of the NCURA Newsletter, and a member of the Professional Development Committee. Previously he served as editor of the scholarly journal Research Management Review and served as a NCURA delegate to the University-Industry Partnership Project in Washington, D.C. He has written articles for the Research Management Review and other publications on research administration topics and has presented at numerous conferences and forums, including the Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin, Ireland. He serves as an advisor to the Program in Law and Technology at the University of Dayton School of Law, Dayton, Ohio.   

 

               Skilled in research and grant development, Professor Casey has reviewed grant proposals for major U.S. Government granting agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). His work for NIH was particularly significant, reviewing leadership applications and clinical trial proposals totaling $1.075B for the $300M National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) HIV/AIDS Clinical Trial Leadership and Unit RFA.  He recently represented the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) (www.uidp.org, part of the National Academies in Washington, D.C.) at a conference on e-Research sponsored by the Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Law and the Australian government at Surfer’s Paradise, Queensland, Australia. The UIDP seeks to strengthen and streamline university-industry research relationships. 

 

               In addition to his career in research administration, Professor Casey has maintained an active agenda in the areas of transportation and public planning for the past 14 years. He has published two books through the American Public Works Association focusing on freeway planning and history in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, including Mayor Frank P. Zeidler: Transportation Development in Post-War Milwaukee, a 2006 book on the transportation policies of the late socialist mayor of Milwaukee, Frank P. Zeidler (1948-1960). He is finishing a manuscript on the Milwaukee County Expressway and Transportation Commission and has presented on these topics to a variety of governmental and non-governmental entities since 1995. 

 

               Professor Casey has taught at Upper Iowa University since 1994, teaching courses in public administration, political science, and law.  He has also taught courses in international law, business law, construction management, and health care policy at four other universities, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marquette University, and Bradley University.  His academic credentials include: B.A., cum laude, political science, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; M.A., international affairs, Marquette University; M.P.A., urban planning, University of Dayton; and J.D., University of Dayton School of Law. While in law school he was a staff member on the Dayton Law Review and spent a summer in London, England, studying Soviet, European Community, and international business law.

Nivea Castro,

Visiting Professor in Law

               Nivea Castro, J.D. has worked with Upper Iowa University since 2000.  In the last Nivea Castro, Visiting Professor in Law, will teach business law, ethics, and labor relations and negotiations.seven years, she has developed and facilitated multiple sections of International Law for U.I.U.’s Masters in Business Administration program.  She has also provided effective, interactive instruction in Business Law I and II and Business Ethics for the Bachelor’s degree programs.

                Professor Castro brings a rich professional history to her work as an instructor at Upper Iowa University.   Professor Castro has taught at the university level since 1991 and entered the world of online instruction in 1999. She is the author of several legal and academic articles. Her keen sense of curriculum and instruction as it pertains to law has enabled her to restructure and customize courses in business law, business ethics, management, employment, conflict mediation, criminal justice, negotiations, and online studies to best meet the individual needs of her students.  

                  Professor Castro’s broad experience in the field of law is carried with her into the classroom.  She practiced law for 29 years in a number of different capacities.  She worked as a staff attorney with Legal Aid, she was lead counsel for Hispanic Interveners in an off-shoot case of Brown v. Board of Education, she sat on the bench as a Master in Family Court, she was a managing attorney with a national law firm, she served as a Guardian ad Litem for neglected and dependant children, and she owned a private law practice that focused on business, real estate, and other civil matters.

                 In addition to her experiences as an attorney and a university professor, Professor Castro has done extensive consulting work, facilitating personal and professional development workshops and seminars across myriad topics.  Some of her favorite consulting experiences include those with Colorado Continuing Legal Education where she taught Guardian ad Litem attorneys child advocacy litigation strategies, with MALCS and Bronx Pride Center where her work was on the prevention of violence against women and young people, with Equality Colorado where she focused on anti-racism, and with MWMF where she facilitated workshops on practical self defense, real estate acquisition, international travel, and salsa dance. In each of these roles, Professor Castro provided not only her legal and professional expertise, but her bilingual and multicultural fluency as well, helping to be a bridge for cultural understanding among and across people, settings, and contexts.

                In 1974, Professor Castro left her native New York City and Puerto Rican community in Brooklyn upon graduation from CUNY-Queens College to attend Northeastern University School of Law in Boston.  She is licensed and has been admitted to the Massachusetts, Delaware, and Colorado Bars and is in the process of admission to the New York State Bar. In the interim, she earned black belt rank in hard and soft styles of martial arts; she has traveled widely throughout Latin America, English-speaking North America, Europe, and parts of Asia; and she is passionate about social justice, scuba diving, salsa dancing, studying American Sign Language, exploring New York City’s secret niches, and relaxing in Colorado.

Chris Kragnes, Sr.

Visiting Professor in Leadership

 

Christopher Kragnes, Sr. is currently the managing partner for Kragnes & Associates, P.C.  He  Chris Kragnes, Sr. will be the visiting professor in leadership, teaching courses in leadership theory, organizational behavior, and money and banking.  practices primarily in criminal law and business law with an emphasis on trial advocacy and trial litigation.  Professor Kragnes has been involved in numerous jury trials in criminal court with people that have been charged with Class “A” felonies, the highest possible charge in the State of Iowa.  His civil trial litigation experience consists of both state and Federal Court.  The types of cases that have been handled are corporate law, employment law, contract law, medical malpractice, and insurance bad faith.  Prior attending law school and establishing his own firm, Professor Kragnes was in retail management with JCPenney as a merchandising assistant. 

               Professor Kragnes earned his Bachelors of Business Administration degree from Baker University in Overland Park, KS.  Upon graduation he attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated in 1998 with both a Masters of Business Administration Degree and a Law Degree.  During his time as a student, he was involved in numerous activities and was selected as a member of the National Order of Barristers for his excellence in courtroom advocacy.  Professor Kragnes, as a law student, successfully argued a case before the Iowa Supreme Court that resulted in a defendant being granted a new trial.   He was also a graduate assistant for the Small Business Development Center.  In this capacity he assisted individuals in the establishment of small businesses.  This included assisting in business organization, taxation, regulations, marketing, finances, accounting, inventory control, and general information specific to their business type. 

               Currently a board member of the Iowa Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, Professor Kragnes is also a member of the C. Edwin Moore Inns of Court, a group that invites attorneys who exhibit quality courtroom advocacy and civility in the practice of law.  He has also been a guest lecturer numerous times in the areas of criminal and business litigation.  Mr. Kragnes is admitted to practice law in both the State and Federal Courts.   

               On a personal note, Professor Kragnes has two wonderful children, ages 9 and 11.  He grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, and his lived in many areas around the midwestern part of the United States before making Des Moines his home.

Judy Loonan,

Visiting Professor in Marketing

           Judy Loonan, Visiting Professor in Marketing, will teach service marketing, marketing research, and contemporary topics in marketing. Judy Loonan currently is owner of JL Training and Consulting. She has been involved in marketing, management and human resources processes for Fortune 500 Companies as well as small companies in the United States. A strong emphasis has been placed on the growing global economy regarding marketing /business practices and diversity in the workplace.

             Professor Loonan has presented at various conferences and seminars on topics of Managing your Marketing Dollars, Diversity in the Workplace, and Stop Safety Training for such firms as the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Grand Slam Marketing Conference and Allen Hospital’s doctor’s conference. She has also presented strategic marketing development to civic organizations and insurance companies at various conferences in the US. In addition to owning her own business, for the past 16 years Professor Loonan has been teaching evening classes to non-traditional students at Upper Iowa University’s Waterloo Center. She has taught many business classes in the fields of Marketing, Management, and Human Resource Management. In addition, she has taught Marketing Management courses for St. Ambrose University’s Masters Degree program at their Waterloo, Iowa location.

              Professor Loonan recently retired early from a Fortune 500 Company, Deere & Company, with 30 years of service in Marketing, Human Resources, and Supply Management. Judy developed and implemented the Visitors Services Program for John Deere, including producing materials in 5 languages for visitors from Europe and South America. The Marketing department was being developed during Judy’s tenure at Deere and she managed and implemented the Yellow Page and Co-Op advertising programs, developed the trade show program for distributors, and managed distributor marketing requirements. Most recently she was in Supply Management and responsible for international purchases of more than $5 million a year. She traveled extensively while working with many of these international suppliers. John Deere is known for its worldwide business which now includes new locations in Tianjin, Beijing, Jiamusi, Harbin, Urumqi, and Ningbo China.

             Prior to Professor Loonan joining Deere & Company, she lived in St. Louis, Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. Although born and raised in the St. Louis area, she moved to Chicago to pursue owning and publishing a magazine, "Midwest Horse Journal". Moving to New York from Chicago, Professor Loonan worked as an International Flight Attendant and traveled to most countries in Western Europe and South America.

             Professor Loonan has a BA in Marketing from Upper Iowa University, a Masters Degree in Communication and Training Technology from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Master of Business Leadership degree from Upper Iowa University. She has taken classes at Drake University in the PhD program for Adult Education and Leadership. She is also a Certified Purchasing Manger (CPM).

              Professor Loonan has been involved in many community activities including Co-coordinator of the Partner’s In Education Program between John Deere and West High School. This program was designed to match businesses with schools in order to identify how today’s education is developing the employees and leaders of tomorrow. She is also on the Advisory Board for Upper Iowa University’s Waterloo Center.

               Professor Loonan is married to her husband, John (Jack), who also worked in Marketing for John Deere and previously traveled all over the world, including many parts of China. They have three sons who are grown and married, in addition to having five grandchildren. They enjoy spending time with their family, which also includes two Labrador retrievers, Gracie and Dugan.

Frances Methvin,

Visiting Professor in Financial Management

               Frances Methvin became associated with Upper Iowa University after Frances Methvin, Visiting Professor in Financial Management, will teach macroeconomics, corporate financial management and elementary statistics. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the UIU New Orleans facilities two years ago and forced the relocation of some of the programs to Alexandria, Louisiana. She has been an adjunct instructor for various business courses since 2006.

               Professor Methvin is taking a leave of absence from her full-time position as Assistant Director of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at Northwestern State University (NSU) to be a visiting instructor at the Raffles Campus for the Fall II term. Responsibilities in her position at NSU include one-on-one counseling, workshops and seminars, and informational resources for existing business owners and potential entrepreneurs who want to start a small business.

               Professor Methvin started her career as a newspaper reporter after receiving a Journalism degree from Louisiana Tech University, and worked for newspapers in Monroe and Alexandria. She then worked for the Central Louisiana Regional Planning and Development District in human resources and economic development planning.

               As an independent community development consultant, she has worked on projects including an arts and crafts center, festivals, parades, and convention hospitality. She became a Certified Community Developer in 1994. She received her Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern State University and has been a business consultant for LSBDC since 1998.

               She is a certified instructor and has taught entrepreneurship programs for both FastTrac® Entrepreneurship Educational Program and NXLevel™ Entrepreneurship Educational Program.

               Cooking and eating are a way of life in Louisiana, and Professor Methvin very much enjoys doing both. Growing up on bayous and rivers generated a lifelong love of anything to do with water and the outdoors. Add music and traveling to the mix, and you have her non-work interests.

Dr. Richard Schuttler,

Visiting Professor in Management

 

                   

                    

                    Dr. Richard Schuttler is an international public speaker, educator, consultant, and author. He has 20-years of diversified, domestic and Dr. Richard Schuttler will serve as the visiting professor in management at UIU-Hong Kong and teach courses in quantitative decisions in business, management cases, and personal selling in the market place.international management/leadership improvement expertise within academic, federal/state governments, and Fortune 1,000 environments developing strategies and implementation methods.  He has mentored executives, faculty, and students from around the world in a variety of professional settings.  He is the owner of Organizational Troubleshooter, LLC and has two offices in Phoenix, Arizona and Honolulu, Hawaii.   www.orgtroubleshooter.org

 

 

                     Dr. Schuttler served as Dean at the University of Phoenix (Business Week’s 2004 #3 Hot Growing Companies) where he was responsible for the Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership and Doctor of Business Administration degree programs that experienced tremendous growth during his five year tenure.  He is the co-author of Working in Groups: Communication Principles and Strategies and contributing author of Online Assessment and Measurement: Foundations and Challenges, as well as various other published material.  Richard co-authored Million Dollar Attitude published in June 2007.  He is currently finalizing a manuscript titled Laws of Communication.

 

                     Richard has an extensive and proven assessment background applying the Malcolm Baldrige U.S. National Quality Awards criteria. Dr. Schuttler served as Senior Judge for the California Team Excellence Award program and Judge for the Arizona State Quality Award Program. He currently serves as a Judge for the Hawaii Governor's Performance Excellence Award.  Dr. Schuttler serves as the Chairman of an Advisor Board for JCG & Associates (land development company) in Knoxville, TN and is on the Board of Directors for Virtual High School of Excellence (online K-12 school) headquartered in Florida.

                    Dr. Richard Schuttler earned his Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences from Walden University.  His research background is with quantitative and qualitative methods and he has experience applying various quality management philosophies and tools in the workplace.  His doctoral dissertation is titled: Cause and Effect Relationship of a Corporate Fitness Center in Hawaii.

 

                    Richard is an independent distributor for direct marketing companies who provides free coaching services to entrepreneurs to start-up and grow their own business.  He is a senior member of the American Society for Quality and is a retired U.S. Navy Officer of 23 years active duty.  Dr. Schuttler is single and has no children.

 

                   Dr Schuttler has been with Upper Iowa University since 1999.  He was one of the founding faculty who started Upper Iowa University’s online program.
