What Services are Available?
Free and confidential short-term counseling to all UIU students.
Individual Counseling
- you and the counselor will discuss the actual number of sessions necessary to address your concerns
- individual sessions are usually scheduled weekly or bi-weekly
Group Counseling
- involves meeting with 6 to 8 other students with similar problems to discuss those areas that interfere with your ability to function at an optimal level
- is available on a variety of topics, if there is enough student interest
- groups will be led by the Director of Counseling, and may be co-facilitated by a student counselor
- students would be asked to make a commitment to staying in the group for at least one term
- examples of groups that may be offered include, but are not limited to; healthy dating relationships, anger management, stress management, self-acceptance, grief, etc.
- if you sign up for a group, attendance and participation are expected
Referral to a Community Agency
Because we offer primarily short-term counseling, we provide referral information for appropriate community resources to students whose needs are beyond the scope of the counseling office.
Consultation
The Director of Counseling Services is available to consult with faculty, staff members, friends or family members who have concerns about a student.
If you have concerns about a student that you would like to discuss, please call Laurie Kirkpatrick at 425-5786.
Because of confidentiality reasons, we cannot provide information to you about the treatment of a specific student without the student's written permission.
