Week 1: July 8 - 12, 2013
*ID 301 Critical Thinking – Betty Firth, Instructor
This course helps the student develop and strengthen the ability to reason soundly and critically. It addresses the purpose and process of critical thinking, language and critical thinking, patterns of argument, modes of reasoning. Prerequisites: ENG 102 or 202 and junior standing. 3 semester credit hours.
"Critical Thinking in essence is the truth. We learn how to use the voice of reason in pursuit of that truth. Logical reasoning extends our comprehension of the truth, from the data we have to what can be inferred from that data. We are interested in the truth due to who we are, of the people we have and will become. Our essence is based on our ideas and beliefs. What we do and how we react to any given situation is determined by the background of those beliefs and ideas. Throughout this course we will provide you with the opportunity to expand your mind using analytical thought processes while combining deductive and inductive thinking resulting in a truthful view substantiated by sound reasoning."
-- Betty Firth, Critical Thinking Instructor
*This course is open only to those students who have completed ENG 102 or 202, and have Junior status. It does not count as a General Education course on the Fayette Campus; however, it does count as a 300-level elective.
PHIL 202 Contemporary Ethics - Allen Ricks, Instructor
This course covers some of the main threats to doctrines and ideas of moral philosophy, including nihilism, relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, the categorical imperative, virtue, and the social contract. The course will focus on a variety of natural hazards and related disasters including flooding, volcanoes, landslides, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunami. Lectures will focus on both the physical processes (e.g. underlying geology or geophysics) of selected natural hazards and the human systems that have developed to minimize the impact of natural disasters.
