» UIU extended university students awarded scholarships

FAYETTE, Iowa (March 19, 2008) - Fourteen Upper Iowa University (UIU) undergraduate students from across the nation, who attend center locations in Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin, as well as independent study and online students located in New York, South Dakota and Washington, were recently awarded scholarships and book vouchers for academic achievement.

UIU scholarship funds have doubled in the last several years due to generous donations from individuals, as well as successful fundraising activities such as UIU's Team Peacock riding RAGBRAI. As a result, Upper Iowa awards over 80-merit based scholarships to undergraduate students annually and for the past four years has also invited students enrolled at its center locations and distance education programs to participate in this honor. Currently one student at each of UIU's civilian and military centers, as well as one student enrolled in UIU's independent study and online programs is eligible to apply.

"This scholarship is more than money for me," said freshman Sheila Colip, who attends UIU's Wausau Center. "It was a huge boost to my confidence and a confirmation that I can achieve my dream of a college degree while raising three children by myself and working fulltime." Colip added, "I believe in paying forward and intend to use my degree to pay this forward some day."

Upper Iowa University students from center locations who received scholarships include Agnes Breunig (Madison Center), Colip (Wausau Center), Brian Enright (Blackhawk Center), Christina Kowal (Milwaukee Center), Nancy Dowling (Prairie du Chien Center), Lori Draffkorn (Elkhorn Center), Enrique Chavez (Des Moines Center), Connie Pitcher (Des Moines Center), Nicole Litterer (Waterloo Center), Sarah Van Wyhe (Ankeny Center), Stephanie Erickson (Online Program), Hyeon Jeong Ahn (Fort Leavenworth Center), Kimberly Locke (Fort Riley Center), Lisa Immerfall (External Degree Program).

UIU students from center locations who received book vouchers include Stephen Kotzen (External Degree Program), Amanda Salyars (External Degree Program), Manuel Arzabal (Alexandria Center), and Jennifer Snook (Online Program).

"The EU scholarship program affirms our commitment and support for our off-campus center students as well as our distance education learners who have demonstrated excellent academic work," said Tim Hunt, associate vice president for the Extended University.

Upper Iowa's annual Honors and Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m. in Garbee Hall on the Fayette campus. For more information about Upper Iowa University, please visit www.uiu.edu.
