FAYETTE, Iowa (August 22, 2008) - Dr. Roland Vazquez, associate professor of social sciences and anthropology at Upper Iowa University, has arranged for a return performance by Red Cedar Chamber Music Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fayette Opera House. The event is free and open to the public.
Red Cedar Chamber Music was founded in 1997 by artists Jan Boland (flute) and John Dowdall (guitar). Their performances often include other musicians. At the Fayette Concert, Klezmer and Classical, they will be joined by David Miller (viola), Loretta O'Sullivan (cello) and Timothy Shiu (violin). The quintet will perform music by Jewish composers Felix Mendelssohn, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Nico Richter, Gideon Klein and George Gershwin, as well as Klezmer folk tunes.
Vazquez and his wife, Magdalena, met Boland and Dowdall last year at a Red Cedar concert, where Vazquez inquired about adding Fayette to the Rural Outreach concert series schedule that brings chamber music to small-town settings.
"One of our passions has been to bring artistic and cultural events to Fayette," said Vazquez. "With the support of Upper Iowa, we have managed to bring this elite group back for another, very different performance." He added, "We have a wonderful venue in the Opera House, and this is an opportunity for people in the local and university communities to hear some wonderful live classical music."
Event sponsors include Upper Iowa University, the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, the James & Norma Jean Rosborough Foundation and the Alliant Energy Foundation.
