Coast Guardsman of the Year
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 22, 2008) - Marine Science Technician 1st Class Anthony Clark, an Upper Iowa University Online student earning a Public Administration degree with an emphasis in Law Enforcement, was recently named 2008 Navy Times Coast Guardsman of the Year.
According to an article on the Military Times web site, "In 2007, Clark went from an assignment in Alaska to the deserts of Iraq, from familiar shipmates to the military branch perhaps least like his own: the Army. But not only did Clark survive his hitch as a sand Coastie, he thrived. By the time he left Iraq for his current job, as an inspector with Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C., Clark was the most sought-after expert in Iraq on hazardous materials, his commander said."
The annual award was established in 2001 by Army Times Publishing Company and is presented by the Military Times Media Group to five "Everyday Heroes" or military personnel who demonstrate pride, dedication and courage beyond what is expected.
Nominations are submitted by readers that include parents, fellow service members, supervisors and commanding officers, and winners are recognized online, in the Military Times newspapers and at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The ceremony is attended by officials from the service member's command and family, as well as members of Congress and senior Pentagon officials.
