2008 Fayette Appreciation Day workers
FAYETTE, Iowa (April 7, 2009) -- For the third straight year, the students, faculty and staff at Upper Iowa University will converge on the city of Fayette to do a spring cleaning. UIU's annual Fayette Appreciation Day will happen on Wed., April 22.

According to project organizer, Executive Director of Student Leadership and Adventure Daryl Grove, "We started community cleanup two years ago in honor of the University's 150th anniversary as a way to show our appreciation to the city of Fayette. The day turned out to be so gratifying for everyone involved that the students have committed to helping annually."

Over 500 individuals are expected to participate. The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a repeat of some of the same projects as last year, such as general city-wide trash pickup and yard work, cleanup and field repair to Cardinal Park, painting Fayette Lumber, and cleanup of the Volga River and nearby walking trail. A number of new projects have also been added, such as a special path cleanup from the AmericInn down to the new walking trail; painting on Main Street, and sprucing up the UIU baseball field.

Four local businesses have offered to help sponsor the event through monetary donations, materials or food. Sponsors include First State Bank of Fayette; Fayette Lumber; Diamond Vogel in Mason City and Sodexo Food Services, Fayette.

Of special interest is Project PC Recycle, sponsored by the Peacock PC Club and the Upper Iowa University Information Technology program. The group will be collecting old computers, towers, printers, and monitors that will be dismantled and recycled. For example, materials such as plastics, glass, and metal components have value and should be reused rather than dumped into a landfill. All items should be delivered to the Edgar Fine Arts Building at Clark and Union Streets from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Wed., Apr. 22, or contact Theresa Kleve at klevet@peacocks.uiu.edu to arrange for pickup.

The work session will end at noon with a picnic lunch at the tennis courts, presentation and photos with UIU President Alan G. Walker, and followed by a sand volleyball tournament at 1 p.m. and a dunk contest at 2 p.m. Lunch is free to anyone who assisted with the cleanup activities.

Members of the community can also sign up to help and participate in Upper Iowa's Fayette Appreciation Day by visiting http://www.uiu.edu/general/alumni_friends/fayette_appreciation_day.html or by e-mailing Grove at groved@uiu.edu.
