» UIU professors awarded two grants from Fayette County Community Foundation

FAYETTE, Iowa (April 20, 2009) - Two Upper Iowa University professors have been awarded separate grants from the Fayette County Community Foundation to help support programs for area youth. Both were recognized along with other 2009 recipients at a special awards ceremony held at the Westgate Fire Station on Thurs., Apr. 16. Upper Iowa University professor Dr. Joseph Elarde receives grant from Robin Bostrom, director of Fayette County Economic Development.

          Dr. Joseph Elarde, assistant professor of information technology, was awarded $3,642.75 to help fund the Peacock Cyber Camp, developed to emphasize of the importance of computing in our society and increase awareness of cyber safety among Fayette County middle school students.

          "The Fayette County Community Foundation's generous support is greatly appreciated," said Elarde. "To improve interest in computing, mathematics, and science in America is our objective, and the foundation is helping us make a difference."

          The camp will be held May 2 in the Edgar Fine Arts Building on the Upper Iowa Fayette campus. Participants will also learn about computer games, programming, and other topics. To register for the Peacock Cyber Camp, contact Elarde at 563-425-5835 or elardej@uiu.edu.

          Dr. Kata McCarville, assistant professor of geosciences, received $4,201.55 for the Take a Kid Outdoors (TAKO) program. The funds will be used to produce marketing materials for the program, which promotes an interest in outdoor activities and ecology in area youth. TAKO hosts events throughout the year at various locations in Fayette County.

          McCarville said, "With these new marketing materials to clearly articulate our mission and vision, TAKO can move to the next level. TAKO's ability to gain support from donors and partners will improve, and we will also reach out to more children and families with our programs."
