WATERLOO, Iowa (June 3, 2009) - The Marketing Principles class at the Upper Iowa University-Waterloo center recently delivered 148 teddy bears to pediatric units at Allen, Covenant and Sartori hospitals in Cedar Falls for a class project, as well as a pallet of non-perishable food to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
According to Professor Judy Loonan, the project was an offshoot of their coursework on real-world marketing applications. "After a fantastic brainstorming session, the class decided to promote their university within the community by being socially responsible," said Loonan. "It was an idea that generated enthusiastic participation by students, faculty and staff at the center."
Dubbed the "Big Give," the inspiration for the teddy bear piece of their assignment originated from a classmate's experience during spring term-a student's daughter was presented with a teddy bear for comfort after undergoing brain surgery. The current economic climate motivated the students to also take up a collection for the food bank.
The drive for both campaigns took place at the UIU-Waterloo Center during April, and the toys and food were delivered personally by Loonan and the students.
