» UIU hosts PBL state fall leadership conference

FAYETTE, IA (November 7, 2008) - Upper Iowa University was chosen to host this year's Iowa PBL State Fall Leadership Conference.

          Over 60 state-wide members and advisers attended the two-day event held on UIU's Fayette campus Oct. 24-25. Colleges represented included the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, Grandview, DMACC-Boone, DMACC-Des Moines, and Upper Iowa.

          The location for this annual conference is chosen each year by the state executive committee. The conference consists of workshops designed to teach individual and chapter improvement, as well as provide social and networking opportunities. Contest and door prizes were also given out.

          Matt Strawn served as keynote speaker. Strawn is founding partner of the public relations and capital investment firm Riverside Partners, part owner of the Iowa Barnstormers Arena Football team, and a 1996 graduate of the University of Iowa. Drawing from his personal experience, he spoke on entrepreneurship, advertising, marketing and knowing your consumer.

          Workshops included "The Art of Negotiation" by Todd Coleman, Wartburg; "Stress/Time Management" by Laurie Kirkpatrick, Upper Iowa; "You're Approved?!" on credit and credit scores by Jennifer Sorensen, Wells Fargo; and "Being an Entrepreneur" by Bob and Betty Firth, Upper Iowa board members; "Job Seeking in a Tight Market" by Wendy Mihm-Herold, Northeast Iowa Workforce and Development; and "Making the Most of your PBL Experience" by Erick Heneke, Erin Snitkey, Ryan Steines, PBL professional division members.

          Special guest speaker included Rick Dickinson, Director and COO, Greater Dubuque Development Corp, who shared his personal story, congressional campaign, the success of Greater Dubuque Development and the major economic challenges facing Iowa businesses. Dickinson also strongly encouraged the attendees to consider seeking jobs in Iowa after graduation.

           Upper Iowa University club members in attendance included Lynn Isvik, advisor; Breina Burgin, vice president; Bridget Pforts, secretary; Shannon Stone, treasurer; Shane Kafka, reporter/historian; Monte Graff, Merry Stover, Kellie Henniges, Dani Dreeszen, Ashley Vsetecka, Dominique Walker, Robert Bennett, Mary Ohloff, and Tonya Burns.

          The 2009 State Leadership Conference will be in Cedar Falls, IA at the University of Northern Iowa, Mar. 6-7.
