» UIU participates in Read for the Record® 2008 Campaign

FAYETTE, Iowa (October 09, 2008) - Upper Iowa University students majoring in education recently read to the kindergarteners at Fayette Elementary and pre-schoolers at Rainbowland as part of Jumpstart's Read for the Record® 2008 Campaign (see photos below).

Jumpstart's nationwide campaign took place Oct. 2 in schools, libraries, stores, hotels, playgrounds, offices, and homes in an attempt to break the world record for the largest shared reading experience in history. The theme was "One day. One book. For children everywhere."

"Students from Upper Iowa are provided opportunities to work with students in educational settings," said Gina Kuker, UIU assistant professor of education. "Through reading at both locations several times, our students gained a better understanding of the read aloud process."
UIU education students brought each child they read to a complimentary copy of this year's official Campaign book, Corduroy from Penguin Young Readers.

Since 1993, Jumpstart has been working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. By bringing at-risk preschool children and caring adults together, it has been able to build the vital literacy, social, and emotional skills children need to thrive. Jumpstart delivers a research-based, best practice curriculum to nearly 15,000 children in close to 79 communities across 20 states in America.
