FAYETTE, Iowa (October 8, 2009) – Upper Iowa University honored four of its alumni at the annual Alumni Banquet held on the Fayette campus Sept. 26 during Homecoming weekend.
Recognized were Betty Andres ’46, Hudson, WI (Service to the University Award); Harry Maue ’76, Bridgeton, MO (Professional Accomplishment Award); Fred Tully ’63, Hill City, SD (Community Service Award), and Scott Michels ’03, Des Moines (Young Alumni Award).
Betty Andres '46, Service to the University Award
Andres is a 1946 graduate of Upper Iowa University, earning a degree in Elementary Education. With her husband, the late William (Bill) Andres ’46, she was instrumental in starting a revitalization campaign of the Fayette campus in the mid-1990s through a generous donation. The Andres couple also supervised the design and development of the campus’ master landscaping plan and personally selected all of the sculptures that enhance the grounds today.
Andres also served on the UIU Board of Trustees for nearly 20 years and in the capacity as Vice Chair from 1990-2003. In Feb. 2009, she was named an Emerita Trustee. Andres was also influential in initiating the fundraising campaign for one of the premiere buildings on the Fayette campus. The Bill and Betty Andres Center was completed in 2006.
Andres has contributed monetarily to countless causes throughout the years at UIU and again during the 2009 President’s Society Recognition event held on Sept. 25, when she presented President Alan G. Walker with a $50,000 check toward the endowed scholarship fund.
“Betty is indeed the ideal example of an alumna who shows her love for her alma mater by giving back,” said President Walker. “Her generosity is something which we will all benefit from well into the future and for which we will always be truly grateful.”
Betty divides her time between her homes on Lake Vermillion and Hudson, Wisconsin, during the summer and Bonita Springs, Florida, in the winter months.
Dr. Harry Maue '76, Professional Accomplishment Award
Dr. Harry Maue was among the first graduating class from Upper Iowa University’s External Degree program in 1976, earning a degree in Business Administration. From UIU, Maue went on to earn a law degree from the University of San Gabriel College of Law (1979); a master’s from Southern Illinois University (1980); a doctorate from St. Louis University (1985); a second bachelor’s degree in Administrative Science from The University of Alabama (1986); and a master’s of law in International Law from the University Of Leicester Faculty Of Law in Oxford (1996).
Maue’s educational background led to an outstanding professional career. In 1985, he founded the firm of Stuart, Maue, Mitchell, and James, Ltd. in St. Louis, creating an entirely new industry and profession in the field of legal audits. Maue’s firm has been acknowledged as the leading pioneer in the field of legal auditing, with such renown clients as Oracle, Chrysler, Dollar General stores, and Juniper Networks, auditing over $3 billion dollars in legal bills on behalf of these clients.
The Wall Street Journal credited Maue as “the founder of the Legal Fee Auditing Industry,” a field in which he has become both nationally and internationally recognized.
Maue has served on the UIU Board of Trustees from 1998 to present, and currently holds the position of Chairperson on the Board of Trustees’ International Committee. He is a past recipient of UIU’s Entrepreneur of the Year award, and has been a generous contributor in support of the University. The lobby of the Andres Center for Business and Education is named for Dr. Maue and his wife, Carolyn, who currently reside in Bridgeton, MO.
Fred Tully ’63, Community Service Award
Fred Tully is a 1963 graduate of Upper Iowa University, earning a degree in Political Science. The fact Tully even went to college is a remarkable story in that he overcame some tough obstacles in his youth, having been raised by a single mother in a poor neighborhood in Manchester, CT where education was not a priority. However, a high school English teacher made a difference in Tully’s life by mentoring him and teaching him the value of learning, particularly reading and writing. As a result, after graduating from high school, Tully enrolled at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, a smaller university with the safety of a small town.
After graduating, Tully joined the Navy but at the end of his military service returned to Iowa to work with troubled youth at the Iowa State Training School in Eldora—a career he followed for the next 15 years. During his time at the Training School, Tully earned his master’s degree from the University of Iowa, married his wife, Maryann, and successfully raised four adopted children (two boys and two girls).
After his children were on their own, Tully moved to South Dakota where he was hired as Program Director and Clinical Director of the Black Hills Children’s Home and Children’s Home Society—again helping abused and neglected youth. He held this position for the next 23 years.
In retirement, Tully continued to help and serve others through his faith as an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church. He not only served as a weekly lay minister in several Black Hills area churches, but was sometime called to other churches across the U.S.
Then in 2002, Tully was asked to become the first Development Director of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a humanitarian and educational endeavor dedicated to honoring the North America Indian. The cornerstone of this foundation is the Crazy Horse Memorial currently being carved out of a mountain in South Dakota. Tully was successful in laying the groundwork for the first-ever multimillion dollar gift to the Foundation, in addition to establishing a long membership list. He recently retired from his role at the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.
Tully and his wife currently reside in Hill City, SD.
Scott Michels ’03, Young Alumni Award
Scott Michels is a 2003 graduate of Upper Iowa University, earning a degree in criminology and psychology, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Michels also earned Academic All-American and Academic All-Conference honors as a member of the UIU wrestling team.
In 2007, Michels earned a law degree from Drake University School of Law with special certificates in Litigation and Dispute Resolution and Constitutional Law and Civil Rights. That same year he also successfully completed the Neal & Bea Smith Law Center Clinic in Criminal Defense from Drake Law School and passed bar admissions to the U.S. District Court Northern District of Iowa and U.S. District Court Southern District of Iowa.
Michels is currently an attorney with Gourley, Rehkemper & Lindholm in Des Moines, practicing in the areas of Civil Litigation, Child Custody, Criminal Defense, Divorce, Family Law, Juvenile Delinquency, and Juvenile Law. He is a member of the Iowa Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Polk County Bar Association, and Iowa State Bar Association.
“When I was hired at Upper Iowa, my first recruiting phone call was to Scott Michels, a fellow Osage Green Devil, to see what his college plans were,” said current UIU Wrestling Coach Heath Grimm. “In fact, I caught him on his way to the mailbox with a signed offer to another school.” Grimm added, “When Scott accepted my offer, not only was I thrilled, but it officially made him my first college wrestling recruit.”
Michels was a multiple year starter for UIU teams that placed at the National Dual Meet Championships in 2001 and 2003 and was on the team that placed 2nd at the NCAA Championships – the highest national finish of any team in UIU history.
According to Grimm, Michels possesses the three most important characteristics he cherishes in all of his athletes: 1) a strong work ethic, which he credits to his parents, Jeff and Jane Michels; 2) be a team player; and most important, 3) loyalty. “Scott was and is loyal to me, his team, and this University,” said Grimm. “He is a true UIU Peacock, and we are extremely proud to say that.”
Michels and his wife are Des Moines area residents and have one son.
