Upper Iowa University is proud to have joined the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Generation Study Abroad initiative to double the number of students studying abroad by the end of the decade. Though 295,000 American college students studied abroad in 2011-12, this represents less than 10% of all undergraduate students according to research conducted by IIE. Universities, providers, associations, and governments from all over the world have come together to seek out new and innovative ways to enable students to overcome the three primary barriers to a study abroad experience:
- Cost: How can we lower costs associated with a study abroad experience while still maintaining a commitment to program excellence and safety?
- Curriculum: How can we empower students with the flexibility to include a study abroad experience into their academic career?
- Culture: How can we work with families, peer groups, university faculty and staff, and the community to foster a culture of encouraging students to engage in a study abroad experience?
