The decision to pursue an education later in life is not always an easy one to make. As a Career Firefighter, our work schedule is somewhat different than the rest of the workforce, so a “traditional” degree program tailored to a working parent didn’t quite fit either.
What I found and truly appreciated with the Independent Study Program from Upper Iowa University was the flexibility in which to pursue my studies. I was able to begin and complete each class within a reasonable timeframe tailored to my needs, I was not bound to a set semester to begin and complete each class. UIU also recognized and awarded credit for previous training hours that Firefighters complete throughout their careers.

Nationally regarded distance learning programs
The Independent Study Program offers full degree programs modeled after correspondence learning. The paper/email based program is specifically designed to make learning as flexible as possible. You may enroll in a course and start in any of our six terms and take up to six-months to complete the course. For those who prefer interaction with other students, the Online Degree Program enables completion of courses in a virtual classroom environment. You can log on to your course at any time. Six eight weeks terms are offered each year. Receive UIU college credit for your Fire Science and EMS training Through our experiential learning program you may be eligible to receive up to 30 college credits for your fire science training.
