Why Study Sustainability?
Earth's ecosystems provide air, water, food, and shelter necessary to the survival of humans and other organisms, and the impacts of human activities on these systems are increasingly evident. In many career fields, we are challenged to meet the needs of the present population without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Sustainability Certificate includes a basis in philosophy and is focused around an interdisciplinary science-based approach. Students pursuing the Sustainability Certificate will examine the theory, principles and practices of sustainability and explore alternative strategies that support environmental health and ecological productivity within social and cultural contexts.
