Where can I download the logos?

Logos are available to download in jpg, tif, and eps formats from the Official UIU logo page. Do not scan logos from other reproductions or download them from other Web sites as this will reduce the quality of the image. Also, remember it is not acceptable to rebuild the logo on your computer, you need to download all images. If you need assistance in downloading a usable file, please contact the UIU Graphics Manager, Beth Petsche in the UIU Marketing and Communications Department at 563-425-5371 or by email at petscheb@uiu.edu.

I'm having trouble downloading a logo from the Web. Why won't it work?

Because the University has a wide variety of computers and software programs, some people may have difficulty. Some computers and software programs are simply outdated and not capable of receiving high-resolution files. If you experience difficulty, please contact the UIU Graphics Manager, Beth Petsche in the UIU Marketing and Communications Department at 563-425-5371 or by email at petscheb@uiu.edu. While a number of people still may have difficulty downloading files that will reproduce adequately, remember, it is important that everyone use a high-quality image that represents the prestigious nature of Upper Iowa University.

I'm in a hurry. Why can't I just recreate the logo? Why do I have to get the proper file from the official Web site?

The logo is created specifically for Upper Iowa University, so it is important that you use the official logo to ensure you are using the exact colors and fonts. Simply selecting a similar font, eyeballing it and then reproducing it will produce differences that may be minor, but will detract from the design and its branding capability. Recreating the logo also takes time, which can be used more effectively completing other projects.

How do I place the new logo in Microsoft Word?

Download the UIU logo from the official logo page and save the logo to your hard drive in a file that you will be able to easily locate, open your Word file, and insert the saved logo into your document. Please note: there are three different sizes (small, medium, and large) of the logo for you to choose from in three different formats (jpg, tif, and eps) see image below. Please remember that that quality of the logo will be reduced when if you have do a lot of resizing, which is why there are several versions available for you to choose.

Can our department have its own logo?

The UIU logo is the main logo to be used throughout the university. If a department wants to use its own logo, they should use the UIU logo and then place the name of their department directly underneath the logo. This logo should be used on all official stationery and other official documentation representing the university as one entity. In the case of a few programs, such as Athletics, that have symbols already branded with the audience, permission may be granted to use the proprietary logo as a secondary element. If you have questions concerning the use of the UIU logo please contact our Graphics Manager, Beth Petsche in the UIU Marketing and Communications Department at 563-425-5371 or petscheb@uiu.edu before adding additional elements.

May I use the University's seal?

The seal may only be used on official University documents, such as diplomas, transcripts, major report covers, certificates, contracts, and formal invitations, unless permission of use is granted to you through the UIU Marketing and Communications Department in collaboration with the President’s Office. It is not to be used as a substitute for the UIU logo. Once permission has been granted, proper reproduction files or materials will be made available and should be reviewed and approved prior to use. How do I fit all the information I need on a business card?

Keep in mind that a business card is designed to be a point of contact, so consider carefully how much information really needs to be on the card. There is an established format for official UIU business cards which can be found through contact with Executive Director of Operations, Ron Crooker at 563-425-5384 or crooker@uiu.edu.

When I'm typing a letter or memo, do I have to use Berkley Book, or can I use Times Roman, Adobe Garamond Pro, or another typeface?

The suggested typefaces are for documents intended for external use to aid in the branding effort in use of the logo and its representation of our university. You are not bound to use any particular typeface for the body text. The above typefaces are suggested in order to ensure a similar affect in presentation have been used, but other standard fonts may also be used depending upon the project. Please avoid using cute or trendy fonts such as Comic Sans, Copperplate, script fonts or anything that would not represent the University with dignity.

Do I have to use the trademark when using the University's logos and symbols?

Yes. All applications of the logo should use the appropriate TM symbol. Whenever you use the UIU logo in any document you need to use the TM symbol with it (see below).

Are there any standards for signs that need to be made for either the interior or exterior of buildings?

Yes. If you need a sign made for either the interior or exterior of a building, consult first with our Graphics Manager, Beth Petsche in the UIU Marketing and Communications Department at 563-425-5371 or by email to petscheb@uiu.edu . Many signs will need to include the proper logo, and will need to conform to specific requirements and proper size, using an eps format. The logo, now downloadable from the web should work in most cases, but it is always good to have someone else to confer with before finalizing signage. Please note: it is important to always have your printing firm send you a proof for you to review in pdf format, so you can verify proper font usage and color.

What are the standards for co-branding?

When creating dual branded applications, there are two options available for you to use in proper placement of co-branded logos. The first option requires you to place the UIU logo on the left with ¼ inch margin. The second logo is placed on the right with ¼ inch margin, both logos of equal size and proportion, with a distance of ½ inch separating the two logos. A vertical rule of equal proportion in height to the logos is placed between the two logos, separating them each by ¼ inch of space.
