Upper Iowa University commencement scheduled for May 12

Class of 2007 marks UIU's 150th Anniversary

FAYETTE, IOWA (April 26, 2007) -- Upper Iowa University’s commencement exercises will be held on Saturday, May 12 in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium on the Fayette campus, recognizing over 1,100 graduating students.  

Among the graduates, approximately 530 students from Upper Iowa’s Fayette campus and nationwide center locations, online and correspondence programs are planning to walk during Saturday’s commencement ceremonies—30 students will receive Master of Business or Public Administration degrees, with the other 500 plus receiving Bachelor of Arts or Science degrees on that day.

Upper Iowa will hold commencement exercises in the morning for the divisions of business, public administration, and science and mathematics, beginning at 10 a.m.  The afternoon exercises will be for the divisions of education and liberal arts, beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Morning refreshments and a brunch buffet will be available for graduates and their families for purchase in the Garbee Hall Cafeteria.

Keynote speaker at the morning ceremony is retired Brigadier General and current President of the UIU Alumni Association Joe Monaco, who graduated in 1980 with a B.S. in Public Administration.  Monaco originates from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, where he returned after retiring from the Army and was elected town manager to several area cities.  He also worked for Upper Iowa University as an East Coast recruiter for a number of years.      

Alfred Ramirez, executive director of Diversity Focus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be the keynote speaker during the afternoon ceremony.  Ramirez has served in various leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, including Special Assistant to the President; Associate Director in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel; Senior Advisor at the Corporation for National Service, and Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.  Ramirez earned a B.A. in Political Science and Urban Studies from Columbia University in New York.  He is originally from East Los Angeles, Calif. and currently resides in Cedar Rapids.

Two student speakers have been chosen to give commencement addresses--Brayton, Iowa-native Whitney Henke from the Fayette campus and Sandra Wildenborg from the UIU Madison center.

“This commencement ceremony marks 150 years of leadership development for Upper Iowa University,” said President Dr. Alan Walker. “I’m especially proud of what Upper Iowa University has done in Fayette to help students graduate with less debt, promote diversity and enhance Iowa’s economy. “

Upper Iowa students average $20,284 in debt upon graduation, compared to $22,835 for private college graduates and $27,238 for public university graduates according to Iowa College Student Aid Commission.
