Upper Iowa University's RN-BSN nursing degree program received full approval from the Iowa Board of Nursing.
According to Dr. Margaret Wimmer Johnson, director of nursing education, this is the final step in a process she has been working on since its inception in 2005.
"This is the last major piece needed to help us advance our nursing program," said Wimmer. "We look forward to serving the people of Iowa for a long time into the future."
The Iowa Board of Nursing granted UIU's RN-BSN program maximum board approval for six years. It is affiliated with more than four dozen clinical facilities throughout the state, offered at the Fayette campus, the DesMoines center, and classes will begin at the Cedar Rapids location in January 2009. Over 50 students are currently enrolled, 21 have graduated to date, and one student has gone on to graduate school.

Hello Faculty, Staff, and Students,
My name is Pam Moss, and I recently accepted the offer as the Assistant Professor in the Nursing Program at Upper Iowa University, beginning my duties on July 1, 2009. I am excited to be here full time after spending a year with Dr. Johnson during my practicum hours for my MSN program, and a year as an adjunct instructor in the program.
My husband, Craig and I reside on an acreage outside West Union with our three children, Mallory (17), Nelson (15), and Cassandra (7). We also have one very busy pointing yellow lab puppy, Dan. Our family spends much of our free time camping, as well as serving our church and community.
I was born and raised in Iowa on a small farm near Humboldt. I graduated from Iowa Central Community College with my Associate Degree in Nursing in 1987. I spent the majority of my career at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, primarily in the Neonatal Intensive Care in Blank Children's Hospital. After moving to the northeast Iowa in the fall of 1999, I chose to return to school, and graduated from Allen College with my BSN in 2002. In 2006, I returned to Allen College to pursue my Master of Science Degree in Nursing Education. I am in the final stages of completion awaiting acceptance of my Summary of my Graduate Project.
I chose to focus my Graduate Project on the implementation of PDA's in the Nursing Program at UIU, and plan to continue this study now that I am here full time. We have a unique program that is innovative thanks to Dr. Johnson and the entire nursing program faculty, and it is my plan to assist them in maintaining this image while meeting the needs of our students.
I will be helping Dr. Johnson with recruitment and advising, as well as teaching NUR 360 Professional Seminar, NUR 310 Nursing Informatics, and NUR 410 Preceptorship.
Please do not hestitate to contact me with questions. I am looking forward to meeting all of you. Thank you,
Pam Moss, MSN(c), BSN, RN

Upper Iowa nursing program receives accreditation from CCNE
In November, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation team conducted a site visit and read a summary report. At that time, UIU's nursing education program had met all standards and no compliance issues were cited. The Upper Iowa Nursing Program learned on April 14, 2008 that the CCNE has granted its RN-BSN Program full accreditation.
"We are thrilled to have achieved this exceptional status for our nursing education program," said Dr. Wimmer Johnson. "However, none of this would have been possible without phenomenal community support." She says the clinical experiences provided by the Winneshiek, Manchester, and Sumner hospitals, Sartori Hospital in Waterloo, Buchanan County Health Center, Postville Community Hospital, and the generosity of numerous donors have added to its success.

On Wednesday, January 7, 2009, Upper Iowa University’s Cedar Rapids Center, will welcome RN-BSN students to the first day of classes. The RN-BSN program began at the Fayette campus in January, 2007.
Nursing classes are held at the Cedar Rapids Center, in a dedicated classroom/lab approximately biweekly. The rest of the coursework is completed through an online learning management system (LMS). Training for the LMS is offered on the first day of classes. Students are able to complete general education requirements by taking online UIU classes, or by enrolling in Center classes.
Faculty for the Cedar Rapids Center RN-BSN program currently remains consistent with that of the Fayette campus program. Transcript evaluations and face-to-face advising appointments are available to Center students as well as to Fayette campus students.
For more information regarding the RN-BSN program at the Cedar Rapids Center, email nursing@uiu.edu.
On January 7th, ten new students started the first day of classes with orientation on the Cedar Rapids Learning Center. They are the very first group of students to attend the nursing program at the Cedar Rapids Center.
There are now over fifty students pursuing their BSN degrees at the Fayette campus, Des Moines Center and Cedar Rapids Center.
