Upper Iowa University volunteers in community service projects April 21
FAYETTE, Iowa (April 16, 2010)—Upper Iowa University students, staff and faculty will be working on several community service projects throughout the area on Wednesday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to noon during the annual Fayette Appreciation Day.
“This is our fourth year to ask members of the Upper Iowa University community to volunteer to help out businesses and organizations in the area,” said UIU President Alan G. Walker. “The Fayette area is home to our campus and we believe we share in the responsibility to see Fayette thrive. This annual service day is an important part of teaching our students to be responsible community members locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.”
This year’s service projects include citywide trash/debris cleanup, starting at Gavin’s; help in moving items at North Fayette School District; painting at Rainbowland, D&D Plumbing, Triple J and Boike’s; cleaning up Volga Lake and Volga River; cleaning the beach access area and bike trail at Klock’s Island; cleaning up Rainbowland Park; conducting maintenance and gardening at the Fayette Public Library; and working on a challenge course/trail near the UIU practice fields.
In addition, UIU will be conducting a food drive, recycling computers, working with residents at Maple Crest, and helping out UIU alumni in the area.
Following the work projects, lunch will be served at noon on King Street. Festivities include a sand volleyball tourney, bags tourney, pie-eating contest, plunger toss, and seed-spitting content.
Rain day is April 28.
