UIU offers series of Small Business Seminars this spring
FAYETTE, Iowa (March 16, 2010) — Upper Iowa University is accepting applications for a Small Business Seminar series to begin in March. The sessions are being created and conducted by the UIU e-Center, which is designed to partner with area businesses to assist in growing their markets, stabilizing the local economy, and fostering entrepreneurship and business growth.
The schedule for each seminar in the series will be determined by the participants. Seminar enrollment is limited to 20 individuals to encourage participation. The series includes Business Plan Development, which will have eight sessions, Website Creation (five sessions), QuickBooks Pro (three sessions), and Federal Tax Preparation (two sessions).
“With the support of grant funding, the e-Center has been able to acquire laptops for the seminars that will allow participants to gain hands-on experience,” said Gerry Scheffelmaier, e-Center director. “We also have been able to hold the cost down to $25 or less for each session. We encourage business owners to take advantage of this cost-effective, practical approach to strengthening their businesses.”
Scheffelmaier said the Business Plan Development seminar will help individuals interested in starting a new business or entering a new market. The seminar will address such areas as management, marketing, financial statement, and legal issues. Each participant will be able to complete a business plan during the sessions.
Website Creation will provide hands-on instruction in developing websites, with participants completing a website for their business during the sessions. QuickBooks Pro will focus on mastering software to create invoices, receipts, inventory, payroll and financial statements. In Federal Tax Preparation, participants will use sample financial information to gain hands-on experience in completing the required forms.
