New High Mark Set for Upper Iowa University and Athletics Department
CLEVELAND, Ohio (August 11, 2011) -- The Division II Athletics Directors Association (DII ADA) has announced the 2010-11 recipients of the DII ADA Academic Achievement Awards. The Academic Achievement Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.
Among the award winners are 43 Peacock student-athletes, representing all 12 of Upper Iowa University’s varsity athletic programs including football (10), men’s basketball (7), softball (6), baseball (4), volleyball (3), women’s tennis (3), men’s soccer (2), women’s basketball (2), women’s soccer (2), wrestling (2), men’s golf (1), and women’s golf (1).
“The University is very proud that our student-athletes have earned this recognition of their academic success,” said UIU President Alan G. Walker. “I congratulate the students, the coaches, and the faculty on a job well done.”
“These awards are a true testament to the hard work not only that our student-athletes put in, but the hard work and long hours that our faculty and staff put into their education,” stated UIU Director of Athletics David Miller. “We strive to promote a student-athlete oriented experience at Upper Iowa; and honors like these go to show that our Peacocks are putting forth a tremendous effort not only on the courts, fields, and mats, but also in the classroom.”
Ninety-eight institutions sent in nominees for the 2010-11 Academic Achievement Awards, while a total of 3,676 student-athletes are recognized this year. The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has 434 student-athletes honored, a record-high for the program. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), in which Upper Iowa University competes, is second with 381 nominees. The NSIC previously held the record for most student-athletes honored with 391 in 2008-09.
