FAYETTE, Iowa (December 19, 2011) – The Upper Iowa University delegation recently returned to Fayette from Asia where they traveled to attend commencement ceremonies for graduates of the UIU locations in Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Led by UIU President Dr. Alan G. Walker, a team of administrators, faculty members and the student government president represent the University on the Asia trip that included two commencement ceremonies for UIU graduates.
President Walker congratulated graduates saying: "This marks a new beginning of your life, a new chapter in what would shape your future. You can be what you want to be, but only if you put your mind to it."
In Malaysia, 119 students received degrees, with 31 of them graduating with honors. In Hong Kong, there were 69 graduates, including six who received masters of business administration degrees.
Keynote speaker for the UIU commencements in Asia was Dr. Artis Hampshire-Cowan, senior vice president and secretary at Howard University, Washington, D.C.
"Today presents a clean slate, a new canvas and unlimited possibilities. Limitless possibilities are available to you, possibilities to write a new chapter in your life's journey -- an unparalleled opportunity to write your personal mission statement and to define your success," Hampshire-Cowan told graduates. "Pease know that as people of the world, we are all inextricably intertwined -- our lives, our prosperity, our economies and our fates are all linked in some manner. You are now among the leaders who will be responsible for ensuring that we prosper together, focusing on our commonality, not perpetuating the old ways of separatism and isolation."
