UIU business students earn national awards at PBL Conference
FAYETTE, Iowa (July 22, 2011)— The Upper Iowa University Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter earned top awards in several areas at the 2011 PBL National Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Fla., recently. UIU PBL members earned the right to attend the national conference by placing in competitive events at the state level.
Amber Ostwinkle, Epworth, Iowa, placed third in the Retail Management category; and Jeremy Lutz, Fayette, Iowa, placed tenth in the Accounting for Professionals category.
In team events, Theresa Kleve of Calmar, Iowa, Sam Hansel of Elkader, Iowa, and Mike Capps II of Strawberry Point, Iowa, placed fifth overall in the Website Design category.
Marissa Graff, Independence, Iowa, made it to the finals (one of the 15 top competitors) in the Help Desk event.
UIU PBL Chapter Advisor and Associate Professor of Business Lynn Isvik accompanied the group to the conference. "It is quite an achievement and honor to compete at the national level; and, as you can see, our students did very well,” said Isvik. “Upper Iowa University students were among 13 winners representing colleges in Iowa."
Iowa colleges represented at the 2011 PBL National Leadership Conference included Ashford University, Grandview University, Loras College, Upper Iowa University, Wartburg College, and Des Moines Area Community College.
PBL is the college division of Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, an association of students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. The organization's mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. During the National Leadership Conference, over 1800 members and advisers participated in business-related and leadership development workshops, elected national officers, and participated in national competitive events.
