Upper Iowa University relocates Des Moines Center to 5000 Westown Parkway
FAYETTE, Iowa (June 27, 2011) — Upper Iowa University has consolidated its educational centers in Ankeny and Des Moines into a single, convenient location at 5000 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines.
Classes started Monday, June 20, at the new location. Upper Iowa University, which has its traditional home campus in Fayette, offers a variety of degrees and certificate programs at 16 educational centers across the United States. UIU has been serving the Des Moines area through its educational center since 1984.
“Through our educational centers, online programming, and independent study programs, UIU is able to extend beyond its campus and provide access to fully accredited, high quality educational programs where students live,” said UIU President Alan G. Walker. “Our Des Moines center is one of our first off-campus locations, and we are pleased to be able to continue to provide our programs in this exciting new venue.”
The UIU Des Moines location serves more than 600 students each year, offering a host of teaching endorsements as well as 18 undergraduate majors. Classes are offered nights and weekends, with new enrollment occurring every eight weeks.
Fritz Oppenlander, UIU regional director of the North Central Region, said the new location offers convenient access from Interstates 80, 35 and 235. The larger facility includes two new computer labs, complete WIFI coverage, and ample parking.
“We solicited input from our students as we designed the new space, including such features as a commons area for students to gather,” Oppenlander said. “We also incorporated ‘green’ elements into the design, including ample natural light, energy conservation features, and internal lighting controlled by motion sensors. It’s a terrific location to be shared by UIU students, faculty, and staff well into the future.”
The UIU Des Moines Center, located on the building’s second and third floors, was designed by Fox Architects of St. Louis. Storey-Kenworthy of Des Moines supplied the furnishings.
