Upper Iowa University President Alan G. Walker and Iowa Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds help cut the ribbon to officially open the new location for the UIU Des Moines Center, which has moved to 5000 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. The UIU Center has been serving primarily non-traditional working adult students for more than 25 years in the Des Moines area.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (September 21, 2011) — Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds spoke about the importance of education in creating jobs and developing the Iowa economy during the grand opening of the new location of the Upper Iowa University Des Moines Center recently. The lieutenant governor was on hand to help cut the ribbon to officially open the center at 5000 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
UIU President Alan G. Walker also spoke at the event, agreeing with Reynolds that rebuilding educational opportunities in Iowa is crucial to preparing Iowa workers, especially nontraditional students, to compete more effectively in a volatile job market.
UIU consolidated its Ankeny and Des Moines centers in the single location over the summer. The University has been providing evening and weekend courses for more than 25 years in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The center, one of the University's 16 U.S. centers, has some 600 students. UIU has classrooms and offices on the second and third floors of the Westown Parkway building. Students can pick from 18 majors, and the center offers certification programs for teachers and a program that allows Registered Nurses to complete a bachelor's of science degree in nursing.
Also speaking at the event were William Duffy, senior vice president for UIU Academic Extension; Fritz Oppenlander, associate vice president for Academic Extension; and UIU student Denise Weston of Grimes.
