Upper Iowa University provides support to "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project in West Union

FAYETTE, Iowa (October 6, 2011) -- Upper Iowa University is among the primary supporters and participants in the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition building project occurring in Fayette County this week.
The ABC television series has selected a West Union family for a makeover project. Audrey Gibbs, a widow with six children, was surprised with the news on Sunday, October 2. The makeover project is scheduled to wrap up by Sunday, October 9; and the episode is expected to air in late 2011 or early 2012. UIU will announce an additional gift later this week.
Andrew Wenthe, UIU vice president of external affairs, says the University was approached by the producers to become involved in the episode by providing volunteers and other support for the project.
"We were pleased to be able to respond in a significant way to support this local family," Wenthe added. "We have been told the family's story, and although we are not at liberty to share details of the story before the episode airs, we know they deserve the help they are getting and we are happy to be included in this effort. It comes as no surprise to me that our students, faculty and staff responded in a big way to our call for volunteers to help with this project."
UIU volunteers worked at the home site on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 5-7.
