Workmen begin construction on two suite-style residence halls at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. |
FAYETTE, Iowa (April 30, 2012) – Construction workers were on a new job site at Upper Iowa University on Monday, April 30, swinging steel into place for two suite-style residence halls on the Fayette campus.
The residence halls, which will be called South Village 2 and 3, are part of a series of suite-style residence halls planned for the growing campus to update student housing.
"Construction of these residence halls is a continuation of the largest capital improvement project in UIU history and part of the ongoing transformation of UIU," said UIU President Alan G. Walker. "We're closing in on $100 million in new construction and major renovations University-wide over the last seven or eight years. Whether we are addressing students' needs in Fayette, building a new education center in another state, or enhancing our academic programming worldwide, Upper Iowa is investing in our 155-year commitment to provide access to a quality education in an environment that creatively addresses the needs of all students."
UIU has seen growing enrollment across the University for seven consecutive years, most notably on the Fayette campus where enrollment has risen 48 percent since 2005. Last fall's enrollment in Fayette was just one student shy of the 1,000 mark. University-wide enrollment is expected to grow again in Fall 2012.
The UIU South Village residence halls offer a variety of suite configurations for students to live singly or together, along with providing kitchen access and common space. All residence halls are built to LEED standards and have geothermal heating and cooling. Free laundry facilities are available in each building.
About 90 students can be housed in each of the buildings, estimated to cost about $8 million each.
Foundations for the buildings were completed in fall 2011, and the residence halls should be ready for occupancy by late fall 2012.
