Upper Iowa University hosts party for oldest living alumna Emma (Burkhart) Hough, '26
Emma (Burkhart) Hough is Upper Iowa's oldest living alumna.
FAYETTE, Iowa (December 10, 2012) – Upper Iowa University Advancement and Alumni Relations, along with the Office of Communications and Marketing, hosted a 108th birthday celebration last week at Hillcrest Home, Sumner, Iowa, honoring UIU's oldest living alumna, Emma (Burkhart) Hough, who celebrated this prestigious milestone December 2.
Hough graduated from Upper Iowa in 1926 with degrees in English and Biology. She is a native of Sumner in northeast Iowa. She married Charles Hough from Osage, Iowa, in 1928. The pair taught in the Sumner School District until 1944 when they moved to Ironwood, Mich., and later, Manistee, Mich.
They had no children and spent five summers living in New York City where they attended Columbia University and roamed the boroughs sightseeing and attending baseball games. In 1969, the couple retired from teaching and settled in Sumner. Charlie passed away in 1981, and soon after, Hough headed out with friends to explore the world.
