Upper Iowa University recognizes faculty and staff for years of service, retirements
Upper Iowa University recognized the significant employment anniversaries of faculty and employees, May 4, including retirements of long-time employees. President Alan G. Walker presented the awards at the annual banquet.
FAYETTE, Iowa (May 5, 2012) – Upper Iowa University expressed its appreciation to 108 long-time faculty and staff during the annual UIU Service Awards and Recognition Banquet Friday, May 4.
Among those to be honored were employees marking their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th year of service to the University. Also recognized were two employees who are retiring this year, after nine years of service each.
Retiring from the University in 2012 are Sheila Miller, Fayette, who most recently served as director of editorial services, and Fritz Oppenlander, who is currently associate vice president for Academic Extension. Miller earned both her bachelor's degree in communications and a master's degree in global business from Upper Iowa University. Before joining UIU, she worked as both a graphic designer and reporter for a local newspaper, as a paraprofessional at Northeast Iowa Community College and the North Fayette School District, and in the oil and gas industry for Enron Corp. in Houston, Texas, and Northern Natural Gas in Omaha, Neb. Oppenlander earned his bachelor's degree in marketing from Northern Illinois University and an executive master of business administration from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Prior to joining UIU, Oppenlander pursued a 30-year business career. His positions ranged from director of marketing to chief information officer and executive vice president of operations, including international operations. Oppenlander was based at the UIU Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
