Upper Iowa University flag football team qualifies for nationals

The Upper Iowa University intramural flag football team is headed to national competition in Florida this January. FAYETTE, Iowa (November 6, 2012) – This past weekend, 11 students represented Upper Iowa University well at the National Campus Championship Series regional intramural flag football competition. Calling themselves, "UIU Baseball," the team defeated the University of Northern Iowa in the championships after clinching a second-half stand. UIU beat UNI, 39-13.
UIU qualified as one of the top eight flag football teams in the nation and will face the seven other qualifying teams January 4-6, 2013, in Orlando, Fla., at the national championship.
Capturing their first regional win over the University of Iowa Saturday, November 3, with a 43-6 final, Upper Iowa went on to lose a heartbreaker on a Hail Mary pass by Olivet College later that day. Olivet beat Upper Iowa, 19-13. Heading into single-elimination playoffs with a 1-1 record, UIU avenged its loss to Olivet with a 25-19 win thanks to a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Sunday, November 4, UIU started the day with a rousing 48-0 shutout victory over Augustana College and took on UNI for the championship.
The Upper Iowa team features Justin Dahl, Rockton, Ill.; Robbie Zaina, Lebanon, Ore.; Rory Kolo, Delavan, Wis.; Tyler Adams, Onalaska, Wis.; Trey Cook, Urbandale, Iowa; Matt Golden, Little Chute, Wis.; Ryan Brown, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mike Henrichs, Hartford, Iowa; Taylor Brecht, Norway, Iowa; Raul Casillas, Compton, Calif.; and Matt Treybig, Orange, Calif.
Brown, Golden and Adams were named to the all-tournament team.
