UIU hosts guest speaker Zach Wahls and One Iowa December 5
FAYETTE, Iowa (November 30, 2012) – Upper Iowa University will host One Iowa and guest speaker Zach Wahls Wednesday, December 5, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Student Center ballroom. Wahls is partnering with One Iowa, the state's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group, to talk about marriage equality.
In 2011, Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing regarding a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. The then-19-year-old son of a same sex couple, Wahls stated, "The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character." That same day his speech was posted on YouTube, where it went viral. Since his testimony, Wahls has written a book, "My Two Moms."
