FAYETTE, Iowa (September 28, 2012) – In 1992, Upper Iowa University opened the UIU Center-Milwaukee to provide educational opportunities to students in the metro area. Although its location has changed, UIU's commitment to academic excellence and civic engagement has endured. UIU will celebrate 20 years in the Milwaukee area with an anniversary reception Thursday, October 18.
A reception and open house for the community and UIU alumni begins at 3 p.m., with a program of speakers starting at 6 p.m. The Center is located at 620 S. 76th Street next to State Fair Park in West Allis.
"UIU has been a pioneer in offering a variety of learning experiences, including the establishment of community-based educational centers, such as the one that has served the Milwaukee area so well for 20 years," said UIU Bill Duffy, senior vice president for Academic Extension. "From the first, these centers have proven highly successful in offering students, especially working adults, the opportunity to complete a college degree and make a meaningful change in their lives. We are proud of each of the 19 UIU education centers in the United States and of the UIU faculty and staff who serve our students everywhere."
The first class graduated from the UIU-Milwaukee Center in 1995 when five students received their bachelor's of science degree in marketing. Since then, UIU-Milwaukee has grown from holding two classes and having nine students the first year to serving over 400 students and offering classes in 13 bachelor degree majors and two associated degree programs each year.
"Over the past 20 years, we have developed a close relationship with the people of West Allis and the surrounding communities," said Center Director Marshall Whitlock. "Since our first classes in 1992, over 1,200 students from the Milwaukee Center have graduated from UIU. They have contributed significantly to the communities in which they live and work, providing leadership in business, non-profit organizations and government agencies."
