FAYETTE, Iowa (August 30, 2013) – The delicious aroma of locally produced food will mingle with the pleasing bouquet of many interesting beverages at Upper Iowa University's first-ever 'Tastings and Touchdowns' fundraising event sponsored by the Andres School of Education Saturday, September 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. This event is being held in the Student Center Ballroom prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff of the UIU Peacocks vs. UMD Bulldogs football game. This is the first home game of the season.
This indoor tailgating event will feature locally grown and produced foods, as well as beverages that will be appealing to a wide range of ages and tastes from vendors including Edgewood Locker, Marquette Maid Winery, Engelbrecht Family Winery, Barilla Pasta and Downs Produce. UIU Dining Services, in cooperation with Upper Iowa University, is in the process of securing locally grown food products to begin offering on campus later this fall.
The Andres School of Education is raising money to assist teacher education students University-wide who are currently required to take the Praxis test before they can be licensed. The Praxis tests measure teacher candidates' knowledge and skills. Additionally, the Andres School of Education is raising funds to assist athletic training education students who take the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. The primary function of the athletic training exam is to assess competence in the discipline of athletic training and protect the public by identifying individuals who are competent to provide athletic training healthcare. The cost per student per Praxis exam or BOC exam is approximately $300.
"Students across Iowa are affected by this expense," said Sue Burrack, assistant professor of education at Upper Iowa University. "Upper Iowa education faculty members are always seeking ways to assist students in obtaining the resources they need to be able to afford such costs. A year ago legislation was passed requiring the Praxis test of all new graduates. At UIU, the Andres School of Education wants to be able to assist students in affording these required tests, and we hope to do that through community and alumni support of the Tastings and Touchdowns event."
Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Students, staff, alumni and friends of Upper Iowa University are welcome to attend. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 563-425-5388 or by visiting Room 123 in the Andres School of Education at UIU's residential campus in Fayette, Iowa. Anyone unable to attend the event, but still wishing to donate may do so by visiting, www.uiu.edu/tasting-touchdown.
