FAYETTE, Iowa (May 3, 2013) - Upper Iowa University hosted its second annual oratorical competition recently. Earning first place in the oral presentation contest was Adriana Chase from Lansing, Iowa. Paul Dupeyrat from Aix-en-Provence, France, placed second, while UIU Madison Center student Kristen Schneider from Reeseville, Wis., was third.
During the oral presentation competition, seven Upper Iowa students prepared an abstract and presentation on the topic of prevention, research and/or education in one of three areas – sexual misconduct, domestic violence or abusive relationships.
The topics of relationship violence and sexual misconduct are timely as Upper Iowa University recognized April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This competition was the final event in a month-long education initiative spearheaded by UIU's Office of Student Development.
Students also competing were Amy Doeppke from Elkader, Iowa; Tiffany Stouffer from Jewell, Iowa; and Austin Schnabel from Sheffield, Iowa.
In order to be considered for competition, contestants needed to have submitted an abstract detailing their research and the points to be covered in their oral delivery.
Judging and critiquing the event were Dr. Katrina Farren-Eller, assistant professor of English; Dr. Brian McQueen, assistant professor of sociology and criminology/criminal justice; Dr. Ryan McGeough, assistant professor of communication; Dr. Melissa Maier, assistant professor of communication; and Dr. Oliver Evans, interim chief academic officer and senior vice president.
