FAYETTE, Iowa (March 7, 2014) – The three Project AWARE sculptures are leaving Upper Iowa University. To send them off in style, as well as welcome spring with open arms and hopefully invoke warmer weather, Upper Iowa will host a going-away learning reception for the public Thursday, March 20, from 4-6 p.m. in the atrium of the Andres School of Education at the Upper Iowa University Fayette campus.
In a truly collaborative effort over the course of nine years, volunteers and activists of Project AWARE (A Watershed Awareness River Expedition) came together for the purpose of cleaning up Iowa rivers and streams and, most importantly, to raise awareness of the need to keep rivers clean. Leading the transformation of river trash to art, sculptor and poet David Williamson worked with volunteers at the request of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Out of the mounds of trash and debris reclaimed from Iowa rivers they have created beautifully whimsical sculptures since 2004.
Learning activities for children during the March 20 UIU event include a scavenger hunt involving the sculptures. Interactive opportunities will also be available for adults. Light refreshments will be served. To learn more about Project AWARE, check out www.uiu.edu/projectaware.
