FAYETTE, Iowa (May 2, 2014) – Upper Iowa University hosted its third annual oratorical competition recently. Earning first place in the oral presentation contest was Samuel Vivas Imparato, a senior marketing and communications double major from Valencia, Venezuela. Tiffany Stouffer, a junior English major from Jewell, Iowa, finished second; and finishing third was Paul Dupeyrat, a sophomore management major from St. Eusebe Savoie, France. Peter Uchenna Nwachukwu, a freshman international business major from Aba, Nigeria, was fourth, while Matthew Beatty, a senior elementary education major from Dyersville, Iowa, placed fifth.
In preparation for the oral presentation competition, the five contestants prepared an abstract and presentation examining the prevention, research and/or education of drinking and cultural differences, or alcohol in university culture. While most of the presenters tackled the subject of changing college students' attitudes toward alcohol use, Vivas Imparato shared his experiences as an international student who grew up in an environment where alcohol is to be enjoyed and not used to excess. His engaging and thought-provoking speech earned him first place honors and an iPad Mini.
Judging the event were Dr. Katrina Farren-Eller, assistant professor of English; Dr. Brian McQueen, assistant professor of sociology and criminology/criminal justice; Dr. Ryan McGeough, assistant professor of communication; Dr. Thomas Jordan, assistant professor of English; and Dr. Paula Shipper, vice president of Academic Extension and Integrated Enrollment Center.
