Accounting Outlook and Salaries
Today’s economic climate means more accountability and transparency in financial reporting—which means Accounting graduates are in increasing demand. Management accountants, internal auditors and CPAs can expect very favorable job prospects. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that accountants and auditors will experience much faster than average job growth through 2018, with employment increasing up to 22 percent.
Jobs will be even easier to find for graduates with expertise in specialized areas, such as accounting and auditing software, international business or current legislation. Certifications and advanced degrees offer employment advantages, but an undergraduate Accounting degree is the place to start.
Accounting graduates work in a variety of fields with varying salaries, but average salaries for some popular specialties include:
- Accounting, tax prep, bookkeeping and payroll services - $61,480
- Management of companies - $59,820
- Insurance carriers - $53,660
- State government - $51,250
UIU prepares Accounting graduates for certification as a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (SMA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Many undergraduate Accounting graduates also pursue graduate studies in accounting before sitting for the professional certification exams.
Accounting graduates can choose to specialize in a variety of sub-fields, including public accounting, corporate accounting, government accounting and auditing, accounting education, non-profit accounting, financial management and financial advising.
UIU offers Accounting courses at the Fayette campus and some UIU educational centers, as well as online and through independent study. Look at our current accounting page to start exploring your career options today.
