StandOut: College Credits While Still in High School

Mary Schmitt

"Having been a financial literacy instructor, I and my husband were grateful to find that with minimal financial assistance we had two sons graduate from UIU debt free -- quite an accomplishment in today’s world of increasing college graduate debt. Mitch (’13) completed high school dual enrollment classes and received outstanding guidance from his UIU accounting advisor. This careful planning allowed him to obtain his undergrad degree in three years -- another cost-saving measure. Mitch is enrolled in the Masters of Accountancy program at Notre Dame University. I feel the knowledgeable instructors and helpful and caring attitudes displayed by all UIU faculty and staff created a positive and stimulating learning atmosphere."

A GUIDE TO DUAL ENROLLMENT FAQ

WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT?

Upper Iowa University offers online courses to eligible high school students to increase the students' opportunities to take college-level courses. Students can take courses on their own, through Iowa's Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program if they are eligible and have school district approval, or through other partnered states and school districts.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

The program is open to 11th and 12th grade students as well as 9th and 10th grade students identified as gifted and talented. All students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to take courses through UIU's Dual Enrollment program or have been accepted and admitted to UIU. Check with your local high school counselor to see if you are eligible today!

HOW MANY CREDIT HOURS CAN I ENROLL IN PER SEMESTER?

Each student is eligible to take up to 11 credit hours per semester at Upper Iowa University if going through PSEO. If taking courses on their own, there is not a limit on the number of courses a student may take.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS FOR IOWA STUDENTS?

Students eligible for the PSEO program have all courses paid for by their school district, including the course, textbooks, necessary materials and fees. If the student is not going through PSEO, the tuition is $250 and the student will have to pay for textbooks, course materials and fees.

For PSEO, if courses are dropped within the allotted time for a tuition refund, the student and/or parent will be responsible for the incurred expenses by the school district. If dropped during the partial refund period, the student and/or parent are responsible for paying the remaining balance to the school district. If the course is failed, the student becomes responsible to the school district for all course expenses.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS FOR NON-IOWA STUDENTS?

Upper Iowa University is continually growing the programs and partnerships across the US. Please contact Justin Marchant (marchantj@uiu.edu or 563-425-5891) for details about your state's dual enrollment tuition rates or for details about how to get the courses offered to your students.

HOW DO I TRANSITION TO COLLEGE?

Following successful completion of the course, it will be recorded on your official Upper Iowa University transcript. All courses will be applied toward completing your degree through Upper Iowa University. Upper Iowa University will offer all UIU Dual Enrollment students up to a 65 percent tuition discount for attending college on the Fayette campus.

CAN I USE THE CREDITS AT ANOTHER COLLEGE OTHER THAN UIU AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSES?

Yes you can, but you will need to confirm with that specific college.

WHAT ABOUT STUDENTS FROM OUTSIDE OF IOWA?

Each state and school district has different regulations and agreements with UIU. Please check with your school district or contact Justin Marchant (marchantj@uiu.edu or 563-425-5891) to answer any questions you may have about participating in the program.

IS ON-SITE CAMPUS ATTENDANCE REQUIRED?
