The Pam Whitmore Scholarship for Excellence in Student Teaching 
Pam Whitmore, Class of 1965, taught for five years in Wisconsin Public Schools, 30 years with the Department of Defense Overseas Schools, and four years with Upper Iowa University as an assistant professor in the department of education. Pam supervised student teachers while at Upper Iowa and became a strong supporter of student teachers. Because of her strong support and love for her students, she is giving a cash award to a student with a GPA of 3.75 or higher who will be student teaching beginning in the fall or spring semester of the 2007-2008 academic year. The scholarship will be given to a student majoring in education.

Michael David Selgelid Memorial Scholarship In memory of their son, Michael David, Dr. and Mrs. O. C. Selgelid established this scholarship with funds raised through the efforts of their friends and Doc Dorman’s “Old Time Peacocks.” Dr. Selgelid, class of 1931 and an organizer of Doc Dorman’s Old Time Peacocks, was also a former Upper Iowa University Trustee.

The Creative Writing Prize in Honor of Georgia May Cramer 
The Creative Writing Prize in Honor of Georgia May Cramer, who taught poetry and short-story writing courses at Upper Iowa University and was a highly positive influence in the life of the donor of this prize, is awarded annually to an Upper Iowa student who shows exceptional talent in creative writing, either poetry or prose. The winner is chosen by vote of those faculty who teach creative writing.

Dr. Louise P. Herring Scholarship 
This scholarship, provided by Dr. Louise Herring, English professor at Upper Iowa University from 1966-1974, is awarded annually to a student completing the sophomore year, to be selected by the English faculty on the basis of exemplary scholarship and sound character. Normally the scholarship is applied in equal portions to the student’s tuition during the junior and senior years.

This scholarship was established in memory of Ivadell Brause, class of 1921 and former professor of English at Upper Iowa University. The awards are given annually to students majoring in education, with preference given to students from Fayette County.

This scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Dr. John Rippe, class of 1928 and longtime member of the Board of Trustees. If there are no eligible students from Minnesota, a student from Iowa may be chosen.

"This scholarship was established in memory of John and Honorine Falb; Honorine was a member of the class of 1929 and a fine musician. The family chose this as a fitting memorial that would demonstrate the affection and loyalty the Falb family has held for Upper Iowa University. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior music student for two years. The third year the fund is used to underwrite the cost of a guest performer or a music workshop."

To honor the memory of Brooke Kerns, athletic training program director and assistant professor of athletic training, the Kerns family established an endowed scholarship because Brooke thought so much of her students. This scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student majoring in athletic training. Only if there is not an athletic training major at Upper Iowa University the scholarship will be awarded to an education major. The scholarship will be awarded to a student completing his/her sophomore or junior year to be used for his/her junior or senior year at Upper Iowa University. The student must have a grade point average of 3.25 or above

Andres Business Scholarship 
Established through a lead gift by Betty R. Andres, class of 1946, and matching funds from business alumni, this scholarship honors the late William A. Andres, class of 1948, and the Andres family’s contributions to Upper Iowa University. William A. Andres was CEO of the Dayton/Hudson Corporation, now the Target Corporation. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore business student for use in the junior year. The scholarship is renewable for the student’s senior year if the criteria are still met.

Foster Cass Foundation Student Scholarship 
Dr. Alan Walker, President of Upper Iowa University 
Foster Cass ’41 established this scholarship in honor of his parents, Rev. Frank W. Cass and Carrie Jackley Cass, and family members who are UIU alumni: Edward J. Cass ’38, Marjorie Swales Cass ’39 and Betty Cass Hersey ’43. The Cass family was the University’s neighbor for many years, and there is a plaque commemorating the location on Union Street. Mr. Cass had a distinguished career in public education in Iowa and California. The scholarship is primarily intended for high school graduates from North Fayette, Elkader or Maquoketa Valley high schools or the greater northeast Iowa area.

This scholarship is available to a UIU student with a preference for graduates of the Rudd, Rockford, Marble Rock and Nora Springs Rock Falls school districts who are Floyd County residents and who demonstrate a financial need. Preference will also be given to students interested in pursuing a teaching and/or coaching career in smaller schools in Iowa or the Midwest and who are first-generation college students or whose parents have minimal college backgrounds.

Carlton W. Knight and Maxine R. Knight Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship pays tribute to Carlton W. Knight and Maxine R. Knight, proprietors of the former Knight Hardware, located on Fayette’s main street from 1900-1965. The annual award is intended for an incoming student. In establishing the scholarship, son Dr. Kip, class of 1962, and Eileen Knight stipulated the award shall provide financial assistance to a deserving individual from within the customer base or ‘trade area’ served by the family-owned and operated Knight’s Hardware with preference given to students who have participated in extracurricular activities, worked in the family business or family farm to ‘support or enhance their family standard of living’ and who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. The first award is being presented in 2010.

Pande Scholarship 
Dr. Alan Walker, President of Upper Iowa University This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence A. Pande, Jr., president of Professional Food-Service Management, Inc. (PFM). Upper Iowa University was the first food service account for PFM. The scholarship is awarded each year to deserving students.

Tracy Nuss - Ackley, Iowa 
Dr. J. D. Parker and Nellie K. Parker Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Eleanor Parker Fox, class of 1926, and Dr. Robert L. Fox, class of 1928, in memory and in honor of Mrs. Fox’s parents. The Parker and Fox families have a long association with Upper Iowa University, going back to the early years of the University’s history. The scholarship is given annually to a third-year student who has exceptionally high grades in the biological sciences and is recommended by the science faculty.

Belknap Baker Family Scholarship

Established by Genevieve Belknap Baker, class of 1936, in honor of her husband, Carleton Baker, class of 1934, and the Belknap and Baker families. Fifteen members of the Belknap and Baker families graduated from Upper Iowa University from 1865 to 1991 over 125 years. Genevieve attended Upper Iowa University on a full scholarship offered by Mrs. John Dickman, widow of John Dickman, president of Upper Iowa University.

To recognize the dedicated service of Raymond Deming, professor of mathematics and astronomy from 1922 to 1953, this scholarship is awarded to a student showing excellence in mathematics.

Hannah Peacock - Coggon, Iowa 
Herz Scholarship 
Presenter: Dr. Alan Walker, President of Upper Iowa University 
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Herz of Lead, South Dakota, established this scholarship. It is awarded annually by vote of the faculty to the sophomore student who has made the best record for the preceding two years, the selection being made on the basis of scholarship. The award is applied to the winner’s tuition during the junior year at Upper Iowa, one-half of the amount each semester.

Casey Popenfoose - Huntley, Illinois 
William F. Gutches Scholarship

This scholarship was given in memory of William F. Gutches, class of 1929 and an outstanding athlete at UIU, who went on to be a successful coach and athletic director. The award is to be given to a deserving student majoring in physical education.

This scholarship is awarded to a rising junior with a major in accounting and a GPA of 3.5 or above. The scholarship would be renewable for the same student in their senior year if they maintain the 3.5 GPA scholarship. If there are no eligible accounting majors, a business administration major can be considered.

CRC Press Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award

This award is given to the outstanding freshman student in chemistry. The award itself is a complimentary copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, along with a commemorative scroll to be mounted inside the front cover. The handbook is a valuable resource tool for any science student.

Ruth Manuta Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given in memory of Ruth Manuta, class of 1987, by her husband, David Manuta, a former professor of chemistry, in honor of Ruth’s great love and appreciation of learning. It is awarded to deserving women students of nontraditional college age who are natives of northeast Iowa.

Warren W. Morgan Scholarship for Business Majors
This scholarship was established by Mr. Warren W. Morgan, alumnus and area businessman through a bequest in his will.  The scholarship is awarded annually to students majoring in business with a preference for students residing in Fayette County or northeast Iowa. The recipient must be a junior who has completed at least half of the required program of studies. The scholarship is renewable for the student’s senior year if the criteria are still met.

Cierra Sago - Chicago, Illinois 
Susan Angeline Collins Memorial Scholarship

This award is sponsored in recognition of the spirit and achievements of Susan Angeline Collins, daughter of slaves, missionary volunteer in Africa for 40 years and Upper Iowa’s first African-American female graduate. The scholarship is awarded to an African-American woman majoring in some field of liberal arts, based on both scholastic and extracurricular achievement.

The student who receives this scholarship must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average, good leadership qualities and good character.

Loyce Bunn, daughter of Gertrude Lenius This scholarship was established in memory of Gertrude Lenius, class of 1967, and is awarded to a student majoring in elementary education with a grade point average of 3.0 or above, and who preferably attended the Wapsie Valley Community Schools or a school in Fayette County.

Krista Steege - Maynard, Iowa 
Faculty Appreciation Scholarship given by Tesoriero, Foley and Wood
This award, sponsored by alumni Dr. Richard Tesoriero, Dr. Donald Foley and Dr. Kurt Wood, is made to an outstanding sophomore who is majoring in biology and chemistry, and if no double major is available, then biology or chemistry, favoring prechiropractic. The award is applied to the student’s junior year financial aid package at Upper Iowa University. Prospective award recipients are recommended to the Honors and Awards Committee by the senior faculty member in the biology department and the chemistry department.

Andres Business Scholarship 
Presenter: Lynn Isvik, Associate Professor of Business and Chair of the Division of Business 
Established through a lead gift by Betty R. Andres, class of 1946, and matching funds from business alumni, this scholarship honors the late William A. Andres, class of 1948, and the Andres family’s contributions to Upper Iowa University. William A. Andres was CEO of the Dayton/Hudson Corporation, now the Target Corporation. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore business student for use in the junior year. The scholarship is renewable for the student’s senior year if the criteria are still met.

Laura Taylor - Woodbury, Minnesota 
Baldwin Memorial Award in Art 
This award was established by art students at Upper Iowa University in memory of Thomas E. Baldwin, class of 1963. An inscribed plaque is awarded annually to the outstanding senior in art.

Presenter: Clyde Pickett, son of Paul and Margaret Pickett 
The Paul and Margaret Pickett Scholarship is awarded to a recipient who is currently enrolled in, or has successfully completed, courses in calculus or advanced mathematics. Dr. Paul Pickett was professor of education from 1953 to 1975 and appreciated the importance of mathematics in one’s overall learning.

Kristine Whitsell - Grundy Center, Iowa 
Dr. Louise P. Herring Scholarship 
Presenter: Dennis Martin, Fayette, Iowa, friend of Louise Herring 
This scholarship, provided by Dr. Louise Herring, English professor at Upper Iowa University from 1966-1974, is awarded annually to a student completing the sophomore year, to be selected by the English faculty on the basis of exemplary scholarship and sound character. Normally the scholarship is applied in equal portions to the student’s tuition during the junior and senior years.

Noah Williford - Oelwein, Iowa 
The Dr. Austin J. Goldsmith Book Scholarship 
Presenter: Dr. Scott Figdore, Professor of Science 
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student majoring in biology, chemistry or mathematics with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, who is intending to pursue graduate studies toward an M.D., M.S. or Ph.D degree in the future. The scholarship is to be used toward the purchase of books for classes during the next academic year. The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the faculty of the Division of Science and Mathematics.

Information Technology Outstanding Student Award 
This award is given anonymously to freshman students with outstanding academic achievement in Information Technology. The scholarship was established to also recognize Information Technology students who are actively involved in community service and committed to professionalism, integrity and developing effective interpersonal communication capabilities.

Joe and Janet (Olson) Brady Scholarship

Beecher Beal and Bertha Beal Roberts/Thomas R. Roberts Student Scholarship 
Dr. Mary Margaret Roberts, Col. Lucile M. Roberts and Mrs. Ruth E. Roberts Peacock established the Beecher Beal and Bertha Beal Roberts/Thomas R. Roberts Student Scholarship in memory of their uncle, Beecher B. Beal, class of 1907, and their parents, Bertha (Beal) Roberts, class of 1907, and Thomas R. Roberts, class of 1905. This is an annual award for one or more students pursuing a career in education, ministry, social work, medicine or nursing. Students must also have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have a record of extracurricular involvement, with preference given to students residing in Butler or Floyd County, Iowa. The award is renewable if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.
