<description>Knoxville, Iowa, native Jake M. Newman was one of just six Upper Iowa University students selected to speak during the UIU Commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 11.  And that's pretty much par for the course for Newman, who received his bachelor's degree in applied plant science and who will begin a career in turf management at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.</description>

<description>Adrian Sanchez Naranjo excused himself from the audience for a few moments during the Upper Iowa Commencement so that he could speak a few words in Spanish to his family who had traveled all the way from Venezuela to see him graduate.  Sanchez was one of six UIU students selected to speak during the three 2013 Commencement exercises on the Fayette campus on May 11.</description>

The Sumner, Iowa, native felt its 14-mile proximity to home was way too close for comfort. However, after dozens of college visits around the region, he could not find the right fit. Finally, a community leader strongly suggested he visit Upper Iowa. The Friday before high school graduation, Storm took a tour, talked to a professor, and ate lunch. He made his admissions deposit that day.</description>

Coming from the urban capital of Kuala Lumpur, Ain watched as the Cedar Rapids landscape melted away to barren farm fields covered with a thick carpet of snow. &quot;I knew Upper Iowa was in the middle of nowhere, but I became a little scared after miles and miles of fields,&quot; she said. &quot;Plus, after 28 hours on a plane, I just wanted to get somewhere and rest.&quot;</description>

<description> FAYETTE, Iowa (April 22, 2013) - Upper Iowa University recently hosted the 29th Northeast Iowa High School Art Show in the Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery in the Edgar Fine Arts Center on the UIU campus. Forty-five emerging high school artists were honored for their artwork in a juried exhibition representing 11 area schools. In all, the event featured the works of 169 high school students from northeast Iowa totaling some 340 works of art in the gallery.</description>
