John Grummel teaching interests range from American politics and institutions to political economy to comparative and international politics.  His research interests include direct democracy and political participation, racial and morality politics, political communication, and political culture.   He has authored/co-authored several articles concerning direct democracy and turnout, direct democracy and race, and direct democracy and moral policy.  In 2008 “Morality Politics, Direct Democracy, and Turnout” appeared in State Politics and Policy Quarterly and a book chapter “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Bulworth: Congress, Corruption, and Political Culture,” appeared in Homer Simpson Goes to Washington: American Politics through Popular Culture (winner of Cawelti Award for the Best Textbook and Primer in Popular Culture for 2008).  Other work includes “Using Simulation to Teach Decision-Making within the Policy Process” which appeared in PS: Political Science & Politics in 2003; “Revisiting the Racial Threat Hypothesis--Voter Support for California’s Proposition 209,” (with Caroline J. Tolbert), which appeared in 2003 in State Politics and Policy Quarterly 3(2); and “The Effects of Ballot Initiatives on Voter Turnout in the American States,” (with Caroline J. Tolbert and Daniel A. Smith.), which appeared in the November 2001 edition of American Politics Research 29 (one of the top 50 most-cited American Politics Research articles).
