Department of History

DIVISION OF LIBERAL ARTS

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

History is a discipline concerned with the past.  Studying history is an indispensible part of cultural literacy and a liberal arts education.  Knowledge of the past is invaluable to function in the present and adjust to an ever changing world.  History helps in understanding human beings and the societies in which they live.  It also is integral to understanding personal identity.  In addition, studying history assists in developing real world skills such as writing, critical reasoning, evaluating evidence, information management, and many others.  It is an excellent discipline for any person considering further professional training, such as law school, or a career in business, academia, or public service.

Students at Upper Iowa University can choose to study History as an elective or to fulfill a general education requirement, they can minor in the subject, or they can receive a teaching endorsement.
