Dr. Shelby Kaura has been an Assistant Professor in the division of Liberal Arts and the lead faculty member at the Des Moines Center at Upper Iowa since 2008. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies; M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy; and B.S. degree in Psychology, all from Iowa State University. As lead faculty at the Des Moines Center, Dr. Kaura teaches a number of courses in support of the Psychology, Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Social Science majors. In addition, she also teaches the critical thinking course and is the Supervising Faculty member for Psychology, Human Services, and Social Science senior projects. Prior to coming to Upper Iowa University, Dr. Kaura completed a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at Iowa State University where she worked as an Adjunct Faculty member teaching undergraduate courses in the HDFS department and as a Research Scientist at the Institute for Social and Behavioral Research. Dr. Kaura was the Project Manager for Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study, a federally funded multimillion dollar longitudinal study of the impact of welfare reform on children and families. Additionally, Dr. Kaura was the Principal Investigator of a grant-funded study investigating violence and abuse among college dating couples. Her current research extends her interest in violence within college-age dating couples to include violence among early and late adolescent dating relationships. Her research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of Family Violence, Youth & Society, and is forthcoming in Violence & Victims. In addition to regular publications, Dr. Kaura has also presented her research at the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) annual meetings, Society for Research on Adolescence bi-annual conference, and the International Family Violence conference. Office hours for the entire 2008-2009 academic year are Mon. – Thurs. 1 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and by appointment.
