Department of Sociology DIVISION OF LIBERAL ARTS UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY Sociology is the study of social relationships and human society. The purpose of the study of sociology is to develop an understanding of the social environment, and to apply this knowledge in future career settings, as well as in other situations in everyday life. Sociology majors and minors gain insight into social institutions ranging from small groups like families, to large organizations, like corporations. Students of sociology also gain insight into diversity at local and global levels, and acquire diversity skills, which are essential in contemporary work environments and professions. Course offerings in sociology cover a wide range. This allows students to construct their major or minor to fit their interests and goals. Sociology majors interested in law and criminal justice would take electives and core electives such as Sociology of Law, Criminology, or Criminal Justice. Students interested in inequality and diversity can take electives and core electives such as Diverse Cultures in America, Gender Roles, or Social Stratification. Students interested in social services can take electives and core electives such as Social Welfare Policy, Methods in Human Services, and Victimology. Internships are available to students of sociology. There are several internship opportunities that allow students to experience the “real world” and to put their skills to work. Students actively participate in selecting their internship experience, and can design them for consistency with their interests and career goals. The sociology major prepares students for a wide variety of careers upon graduation. Some of the choices of Upper Iowa University sociology majors include careers in: human and social services, health care, gerontology, criminal justice, corrections, the legal field, business, and consulting. The sociology major can also serve as excellent preparation for graduate school. Some graduates choose to enter Masters and Doctorate programs in Sociology. Others seek training in Social Work, pursuing an MSW or Doctorate in Social Work. The sociology major also prepares students to go on to Law School.
