Department of Spanish

DIVISION OF LIBERAL ARTS

UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY

Students at Upper Iowa University can choose to study Spanish as an elective or to fulfill a general education requirement, they can minor in the subject, or they can receive a teaching endorsement.

The study of foreign languages opens doors to other cultures.  Spanish is certainly no exception, and might very well be the exemplar.  The Spanish curriculum at UIU stresses both language learning and cultural environment.  With Spanish speakers as the largest and fastest growing minority population in the U.S. as a whole and the state of Iowa, study of the language is beneficial for those majoring in the fields of business and education, as well as just about any other.

All those pursuing a minor or educational endorsement take Intermediate Spanish I & II, Advanced Spanish I & II, Introduction to Hispanic Culture and Society, and Culture & Society of Spain.  Minors are required to complete a Special Project in concert with the Spanish Department faculty.  In order to meet state contact-hour requirements, those pursuing the Education endorsement are required to take Beginning Spanish I or II as well as Professional Spanish.

It is possible to receive either six or twelve hours of the language-course credit through demonstration of proficiency on the College-Level Examination Program, or CLEP, test.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the extra-curricular language and culture-related activities connected to a yearly commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which has in the past included concerts, lectures, and films, all connected to Spanish-language culture.
