Upper Iowa University gives much needed items to local community

Fayette, Iowa (July 5, 2006) – Two buildings on the Upper Iowa University Fayette campus have been undergoing major renovations over the past year.  Alexander-Dickman Hall and the Edgar Fine Arts buildings are being remodeled to accommodate the growing staffing needs at the university.

As a result, items that were once considered a necessity are no longer needed, such as window air conditioning units and cubicle walls.  Both buildings have been completely remodeled and equipped with central air conditioning.

Instead of discarding these useful items, Ron Crooker, UIU executive director of operations contacted several area organizations that could utilize them.  As a result, Joan Nelson, Winneshiek County family service specialist with Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) in Decorah received three air conditioners; NEICAC's Allamakee County family service office in Waukon received four; NEICAC's West Union office received two, and the Fayette County Food Shelf in Fayette took shelving and cubicle walls, as they anticipated receiving a cash donation for them.

According to Nelson, “With the hot, humid weather we are currently experiencing, these air conditioners could not have come at a better time.  We immediately gave them all out to elderly people in the area with breathing problems.”  She added, “It was just nice to have them to give to our clients with medical needs.  We are grateful to Upper Iowa for the gesture.”

NEICAC accepts donations of air conditioners, fans, furniture, and major appliances, such as washers and dryers.  With school approaching, many low-income families are hard pressed to acquire school supplies for their kids.  In addition, food donations are needed at the Waverly, Cresco and Decorah local food pantries.

NEICAC has family service offices in Waukon, Decorah, Elkader, West Union, Oelwein, Waverly, New Hampton, and Cresco.  Donations are distributed to those that are truly in need and are tax deductible.  Cash donations are also tax deductible

If you are willing to donate any of these items, please contact Joan Nelson at 563-382-8436 or the NEICAC family service office in your area.
