Upper Iowa University inducts twenty-one scholars into new honor society

Fayette (January 28, 2006)—Twenty-one Upper Iowa University students were inducted into UIU’s newly-established chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society on January 26, 2006, during a symbolic ceremony held in the Upper Iowa Rooms on the Fayette campus.  UIU joins eight other private colleges in Iowa as members of Alpha Chi.

            To be eligible for membership in Alpha Chi, a student must be asked by the institutional chapter, be either a junior or senior, and ranked in the top ten percent of his or her respective class.  Among those Upper Iowa University students qualifying for this prestigious honor and inducted into Alpha Chi are T.J. Beavers; Kristen Berns, Jana Bessey, Jill Boese, Zach Collins, Travis Donahue, Dustin Drewes, Jessica Everding, Jenny Fangman, Jodi Grover, Mistie Holaday, Josh Handke, Whitney Henke, Jennifer Hennessy, Erin Jamison, Jena Kilburg, Sabrina Martin, Jessica Mott, Lucas Nielsen, Lindy Tommasin, Carlo Vottola, and Jillian White.

            “Today is an important day for Upper Iowa University .  We have great respect for the reputation and prominence associated with Alpha Chi,” states Dr. Ed Ogle, Sr. Vice President for the Residential University .  “The academic experience we provide at Upper Iowa integrates well with the aims of Alpha Chi, because we adhere to a vision of education that illumines, disciplines, and frees the mind, liberates the heart, and emancipates the spirit.”  Ogle adds, “I am extremely proud of our students; they conduct themselves with honor and are very deserving of this national recognition.”            

            Following the induction ceremony, officers for UIU’s first Alpha Chi chapter were elected and installed.  Newly-elected officers include Lucas Nielsen, President; Josh Handke, Vice President; Jodi Grover, Secretary; Dustin Drewes, Treasurer; and Jillian White, Historian.

            Alpha Chi has some 300 distinctive chapters nationwide, including Puerto Rico, and inducts more than 11,000 members annually.  It is distinctive in that it involves members in all aspects of its operation, including chapter officer leadership, student representation on the National Council, local chapter event planning, and presenting scholarly programs at regional and national conventions.  For more information about Alpha Chi, go to www.harding.edu/alphachi.
