Upper Iowa University announces Emergency and Disaster Management major

Fayette, Iowa (February 17, 2006) -- Upper Iowa University (UIU) announced a new Emergency and Disaster Management (EDM) major in the Bachelor of Science program to meet the demands of a post 9/11 world.  The major was developed in collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) higher education initiatives in response to employer and student inquiries and is designed for managers and executives in first responder, local and state planning, and federal agencies.

"Upper Iowa's leading edge Emergency and Disaster Management program is a well founded and comprehensive approach to the challenges facing public service professionals of the future,” said Michael Nehring, Instructor, Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and UIU Adjunct Faculty member in EDM.

The EDM major is offered at UIU through face-to-face, online and correspondence courses, allowing students to study when and where it is most convenient for them. More information on the program is available by visiting http://www.uiu.edu or calling 877-366-0581 today.

“I chose the Emergency and Disaster Management major at Upper Iowa University because the courses were appealing to me,” said Scott Foulk, an EDM major at UIU’s Des Moines Center. “My previous college experience prepared me for the program, so transferring to UIU was easy.”

UIU’s program was developed under the guidance of a national advisory committee including UIU online faculty member, Peter Black, who serves in the Office of the Inspector General, Department of Defense; Kay Goss of Electronic Data Systems Corporation, Sr. Advisor for Homeland Security, Business Continuity Planning and Emergency Management Services; Ellen Gordon, Associate Director, Executive Education Programs for the Center for Homeland Defense and Security - Naval Postgraduate School; and David Miller, Administrator at the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Iowa Department of Public Defense.
