Upper Iowa University president to participate in local Civil War re-enactment activities

FAYETTE, IOWA (June 5, 2006) – Dr. Alan Walker, president of Upper Iowa University, will speak during the opening ceremonies of Thunder in the Hills 2006 at Heritage Farm Park in Clermont, Iowa on June 16.  The three-day event, June 16-18, is planned by Clermont area community groups to offer the public a true Civil War experience.

Some of the planned activities include displays of Civil War artifacts, a living history museum, Civil War battle re-enactments, a town ball, dress parade, and music and food from the era.  Upper Iowa has also loaned a 34-star, hand-sewn flag to be displayed beside an authentic Company B 28 Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regimental Battle Flag obtained by the Masonic Grand Lodge of Iowa.  The Upper Iowa flag was sewn during the Civil War and given to student-soldiers to carry with them.  UIU student-soldiers participated in 17 major battles.  Walker will play “Taps” on his bugle during the presentation of the flag.

According to Jan Bear, secretary of the Heritage Farm Park, “We couldn’t do this without total community involvement and help.”  Just a few of the organizations Bear mentioned are the Masonic Grand Lodge and the Clermont Masonic Lodge, Clermont Civic Club, Young Women’s Club, Montauk Group, Upper Iowa University, as well as scores of other volunteers.

For more information about the event and admission costs, please go to www.iowavalor.com or call 563-422-5199.
